Loud clunking noise from front - getting worse quickly |
|
Hi all,
About 3 months ago I heard a fairly quiet clunking coming from the front while pulling away. It was a one off but heard it again with increasing frequency until now it's almost non stop when I'm going less than 30mph and getting really loud.
What's bad is that I picked it up from MOTing today with no advisories and apart from some brake pipes it didn't need anything doing to it. When I mentioned the noise to the mechanic he said it is usually the lower control arm bushes but presumably he would have spotted that in the MOT. On the drive home it was at its loudest to date. Both forwards and backwards, worse when the cars rocking due to bumps or heavy breaking. The clunking sounds like something rotating and increases in speed when the car accelerates and decelerates. Other than that the disco drives beautifully so nothing's jumping out at me.
I'm wondering if it might be a wheel bearing, or a bush which the mechanic has missed on the MOT. I'm also considering the possibility of something scary like the tranny or the diff in which case I'll go and cry haha It's going to the garage next week and I've not given you much to go on but any ideas very welcome?
By the way it's a 09 Disco 3 Auto 103K Discovery 3 XS - sold

Wouldn't a bad wheel bearing or CV Joint be an MOT Fail? Gone 2016 Landmark D4

CV joint no, not a tested item. Wheel bearings, depends how far gone they are. If a bearing is on its way out its generally more of a rumble then a clunk. Personally I'd look at the CV joints. Si
