Loud ticking on idle 3.0tdv6

Evening gents,

I've come back to the disco fold again this time in a 2010 D4 hse, had it a couple weeks, I have to say it's a lovely thing, the power compared to the 2.7tdv6 is very impressive.

Anyway, in my short owner ship so far its been trying my patience somewhat. A minor diesel leak to start with which was no big deal, but on Monday the battery went flat due to a non charging alternator.

I have just put a new genuine alternator onto it this evening, put pretty much everything back together apart from the viscous fan so I could keep an eye on the initial start up.

To my joy the voltage across the battery is right up 14+ volts so the new alternator seems to have cured the problem.

However I now have a loud tick heard while the engine is running which I didn't have before. Its a metallic sound, kind of like the sound of a bolt tinking against the idler pulley wheel, is about the best description I can muster.

This tick is loud, consistent about twice a second, it does not alter with change in engine rpm.

I'm trying to track it down with engine stethoscope (aka long Trolly jack handle!) but all of the rotating part I'm touching I can't hear it.

Its most noticeable through the front of the grill.

Any ideas? I took a Vidio but don't know if I can upload it?

Many thanks Rog

False alarm fellas, I carried on looking after I wrote my first post and it turns out it was the viscous coupling, I don't know anything about its operation but I'm assuming it has some kind of actuator inside the hub to lock up or unlock the fan maybe?

Anyway I re attached the fan and started in up, fan span like crazy as Normal on a cold start, then after a couple of revs the noise has disappeared.

Nice little initiation ceremony back into disco ownership Laughing

Cheers Rog

Do it from the top hard part will be doing the plug at the back need to pull out the safety clip and then unplug it best way to do this is to unbolt it first then pull it forward reach behind to then get to said clip I do this by lying on the engine. It can take a bit of time but still quicker than removing the body Big Cry
