low coolant
hi guys
new disco3 3500km on clock showing low coolant on start up
checked bottle and it was low so topped it up
this is 2nd time this has happened in last few weeks
it must be loosing coolant as far as i can see no loose pipes
the only other thing is the head gasket gone
any ideas would be appreciated

If the HG was gone it would show contamination in the expansion tank.Any evidence of coolant staining on pipes/hoses or the U/S of your D3 ?
Make sure you only check the coolant when the engine is cold. Low coolant warnings were a familiar problem in earlier cars due to a faulty sensor in the expansion tank. If you 'top-up' when the engine is hot you may find that you are actually overfilling it. This will be seen when the engine is cold again and the level goes beyond max. If there are no signs of coolant loss then I'd suspect the sensor. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

thanks for replies
the level is low and needs to be topped up
so must be loosing coolant some where
no evidence of staing on underside or pipes

I was told that the float can take in water resulting in the level being lower, early ones were replaced due to this and sensor problems!

If you fill it too much then when it gets hot it expands and the excess is bled out. So when it cools again the level will be down again when you look at it. Make sure it goes down again gefore filling. I had same warning, the ball in the float sensor sinks and doesnt float again, needed a new header tank/bottle, isnt that expensive, solved problem.Got our Disco... Love it.....

I just had my 2 year service on my TDV6 MY07 SE and they replaced the expansion tank as I had noted the 'low coolant' message for a week or so only on start up and only for the first couple of minutes after starting. On checking the tank it was low (almost empty) but didn't check it when cold.
So maybe also a problem for some 07 models too?regards

Had a slight coolant leak on my D3. It turned out to be a loose hose clamp.The Bearded Dragon
Glad I'm not the only one experiencing this 'problem'.
A few weeks ago, SWMBO told me that she had the 'low coolant' message appear. It then went off again after a while. Never gave it much thought at first as I had never seen the message before but week before last, it appeared for the first time when I was driving. To start with, it would pop up once every few days but now it appears pretty much every time I use the car. The amber warning light has never come on, the car has never overheated and I have checked the coolant level and had a look for leaks but all seems fine.
Towed the tintent to Cornwall and back last week and the message appeared much more often, especially when accelerating. No problems with overheating though, the coolant level is fine and still no signs of leaks. I'll get the stealer to check it out when I get the car serviced before we go to France in July.Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

Funny that, While towing last week the low coolant warning message appeared when checked level all ok.
On start up no message and has not been on since?
Low coolant warnings were a familiar problem in earlier cars due to a faulty sensor in the expansion tank.
Anyone know where this sensor is? Can it be changed independently of the expansion tank?Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

Its built into the expansion tank AFAIK and has to be changed as a complete unit, common problem on early models all done under warranty but not a big job,

Hi,
I had problems with the low coolant warning and had the bottle changed. This stopped the problem for a couple of years but it reappered. As you say light comes on with the warning message. Mine was slightly low on water each time but on checking around the engine I couldn't see any leeaks or dampness. This carried on for a while slowly getting worse each time the light came on. Eventually I traced it to a plastic t piece with a sensor in it. This was in the coolant line just to the rear of the radiator. Started with a small leak which dropped onto the fan blades and was spun of or dried in the heat. Worth a look at.
