I've been looking through the threads at trackers & there a lot of information but not much that's recent. tech moves on so quickly these days I thought i'd raise the question again.
I'm looking to install a simple low cost tracker in one of our cars. It's purely to see where it is at any given time. It won't be used for recovery after theft or to assist in lowering insurance premiums.
I can see the Rewire Security range have been recommended a few times & the DB2 with 12month sub looks a decent price at £59.99.
Is there a lower cost alternative anyone has recently invested in? If I buy a device only online & then fit a data only sim would that work out cheaper? Any recommendations on the device or sim?
I presume the sim based devices purely ping the vehicle location & not much else?
With 3G being phased out, would I need to ensure it's a 4G compatible device to future proof it?
Thanks in advance

Have you looked at TruTrak? The FMT100 is really a Teltonika box. The device is one time, you then pay annual (or whatever) plan you want.
While the 3G networks will be sunset sooner due to capacity migration to 5G on the same spectrum, the 2G networks will be run until 2030(ish) in many countries. Plenty of industry automation, smart meter, M2M apps there.
I’ve got a trutrak for a year now.

Just buy a GiffGaff SIM and you're away.Discovery 4 HSE - Aintree Green
Freelander 2 TD4 SE Automatic - Tonga Green
Defender XS - Tonga Green - Gone Now
Freelander 1 Td4 ES Manual - Epsom Green - Gone Now
Freelander 1 Td4 Kalahari SE - Epsom Green - Gone Now
Freelander 1 XEi - Epsom Green - Gone Now
with the GiffGaff sim, does it just need PAYG credit on it or will it need monthly data bundles to be purchased?
Giffgaff Goodybag bundles expire, just put ordinary on instead as it just needs topping up a few times a year..

They are one of the best companies out there.. I have one of their original units which is now over 15 yrs old and still working! Just send it back to them every so often for a new battery to be soldered in!
The owner is passionate about doing the right thing and catching the baddies!

I'm impressed with the videos on YouTube they appear very dedicated
I've bitten the bullet & going to trial the Vigitech FMT100.
Thanks for the GiffGaff info Dean, I have a GiffGaff PAYG sim in a second phone somewhere, I might get one of the cheap trackers off the bay & trial it as a comparison.
Those Airtags look interesting Pete I might invest in some, not for the car, but I have plenty of other uses I can think of

Bit late for my reply, but I've fitted a tracker to my bike. £19 and looks like a relay. £3 sim with Lebara who use Vodafone network.
It will give me geo fence info if removed or enters, vidration alert, ign on and off, and all the usual status of the tracker. I can use Micodus for the app or just text it "where" and it sends me a Google maps link which I can then just press navigate for directions.
It will also show me the speed and route of the last journey. For £19 and a £3 a month sim, it's amazing. Going to fit them to mine and the mrs' motors too.
Saw those relay ones too & bought one to use with the GiffGaff sim. I'll be interested to see how it performs.

For the money, its brilliant. Can even wire it to the fuel pump (the advert suggests oil, but I assume that's a bad translation) and cut it off so the thief cannot continue on the machine. It will intermittently switch it off if above 60kmh and then cut it off completely below that speed so not to cause a collision.
