Why is LPFP so complex?

Hi all

I have been replacing my LPFP using this marvelous guide:

Robbie's Guide To The Low Pressure Fuel System
https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic130062.htm

This forum is truly amazingly helpful! Very Happy

My god, this fuel tank pump complex! I have changed a few in-tank fuel pumps on different cars but this has to be the most complex i have come across.

I mean whats this thing:

and why does it have 1 black wire going to it?

I am just curious.....

Nope, that's external - the picture is of the return restrictor, the wire is a ground strap to safely dissipate any static electricity generated by the spring-damped diaphragm.
