LR Snow Chains

All this talk of snow, snow and snow had me looking for snow chains for the D3 in the hope that once the ice age hits we may get some snow in central scotland to talk about.

I came across the LR ones at £400 for a pair Shocked they do look good though. For those with chains what type do you have and cost? Just out of interest Thumbs Up

Dunc, out of interest mate, how easy are they to fit. I remember a chat I had with Christyler and he spoke about driving in circles to ensure they were tight and getting under the car.

I take it these would be okay with MTR's ?

I know I sound like I'm going to buy a set, but just interested in knowing more about them, as I cannot see us getting anyway near enough snow here to warrant them, no matter what Geoff Hoon says Rolling Eyes

I had spike spiders (the same as the linked chains at the top of the page) for my Alfa 156. Brilliant piece of kit. You fit a hub plate, takes about 3 minutes per wheel, then slip the plate with the arms over this and drive off. If you think you'll need them a few times over the course of a week or so you leave the hub plate on, so it only takes about 60 seconds per side to fit the main plate and chains.

These guys do them for the D3 for £299

I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Good like Al Thumbs Up

How would MTR's fair with the chunky pattern versus the road tyre version which would be smoother. Any potential damage if the blades of the chain got skewed in the block trend with a fair bit of weight on them.

Saying that Dunc and Chris have them fitted to coopers, which has a block tread as well.....

...interesting....cheers Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Saved the link for when I can justify buying a set.........just in case Laughing

Would they remain on the wheel going through frozen rutted tracks Question

The 'proper' Pewag chains will - amazing what they can cope with (being spun on rocks etc). Or were you talking about the spider ones?

Andrew,

not sure about the second set, but the ones I had :

http://www.pewag.com/product/popup_image.php?pid=585&pic=0

were used on the Croiseire and were used in very rutted snowy/icy tracks and also on some icy rocky sections. Stayed on no trouble Thumbs Up

Re fitting. They are quite easy when you have practiced a bit. you do need to drive a few metres to bed them in and then re tighten. But you have to do this with all snow chains , certainly the ones i have allways had. the more you can tighten the more they will stay on and not move about on the tyre.

you need to lay the chains on the floor next to the tyres, then lift them onto the top of the tyre. you then need to reach around the back of the wheel and attach the clip, then do the same on the front of the tyre. Tighten them up a bit then move the car so the join is at the top. you can then tighten up. Drive a few meters then tighten again. I have marked my chain where the links should be tightened to so i know when they are fully tightened.

OR you can clip them onto the wheel and drive them on. I find doing it manually a lot easier and more reliable to get a tight fit.

Pewags are the mutts nutts, I have a set of four on my Defender 110, they are the commercial type.

Used RUDD chains years ago but found they did not last as well.

Will chains for a D2 18" wheel fit a D3. Don't have them but have seen a set second hand.
