LR3 4.0 Petrol Fan Belt

Hi, my fan belt has fallen off the pulleys. How difficult is this for an average home “mechanic” to repair? The car is under warranty with a $400NZD excess to pay. I can’t seem to find a manual which covers this model. I am in Christchurch area. Any advice much appreciated!

If your LR3 is like mine (2007 LR3 with 4.0 "Cologne" V6 gasoline) then you must remove the fan shroud, followed by the fan/clutch assembly. Then you can remove the old belt and install the new one. After that you then replace all the other stuff and you are set to go. It's not hard to do but is a pain in the backside, you need a 36mm wrench and a strap wrench to remove the fan/clutch assembly (left to loosen) if you have the same engine as mine...

Thanks for the response. I have a new belt and have fitted it without removing the fan etc. However, it is way too slack. I can’t find a diagram which shows the correct routing of the belt.

If you have the Ford Cologne V6 4.0L engine, then this diagram of a 2008 Ford Ranger 4.0L V6 at http://www.serpentinebeltdiagram.com/serpe...ine-02950/ is the correct way to route the serpentine belt. CS is of course the crankshaft harmonic balancer, directly above it is the water pump pulley and directly above that is the idler pulley. Top left is alternator, under that is the tensioner assembly. Top right is the power steering pump, below that is the air conditioning compressor. Good luck, we had a time figuring it out, but if only we'd have looked at the Ford diagram for the exact same engine...

I would check the temperature gauge to make sure it is not overheating after installation, the water pump is sort of critical about the direction it turns... Exclamation

Thanks heaps for that! I couldn’t find a thing for a LR so very much appreciated. I now have the belt on and checked the route with the diagram and it all looks and feels good. Not sure why the original belt came off though, it looks pretty good. If ever you nip over to NZ, I owe you a beer! Thanks mate.

Well thanks for the invite, we are in our early 70's and perhaps may head for Australia and New Zealand next year. Glad to be able to help...

Well, I covered around 40kms, heard a squealing noise and the belt has come off again! Before I fitted it I checked all pulleys ran smooth and there was plenty of tension in the auto adjuster. Something must be misaligned but all looks good. Sorry to be a pain, but do you have any suggestions as to cause? Cheers

All I can think of is either a defective belt tensioner or perhaps maybe an idler pulley, unless there is an alignment issue belts do not normally come off. Have a peek at this Youtube video by Gates (belts) for a bit more information...

A squealing noise sometimes indicates a tensioner or a belt problem

Thanks mate, I will investigate the tensioner and idler pulley more closely. Probably take it into a shop for them to look at. Never had any problems with my 05 Disco 4.4 I had a few years ago, hopefully the v6 will prove itself in the end!

I do recall that when we replaced the engine the Land Rover tensioner pulley assembly had an engine block alignment tab broken so we used the Ford Ranger tensioner assembly. I have had no issues with the serpentine belt...

The belt I used was a Continental Serpentine Belt 4060820, just in case you needed to know...

From my experience, belts don't usually just come off, there is usually a good reason, it's worth checking each pulley for play ion the bearings. also as you say the tensioner is worth looking at, if I were you, if all other pulleys seem fine, fit a NEW belt and NEW tensioner Thumbs Up

Hopefully garage finally found the cause, my harmonic balance wheel was damaged. Not the cheapest component but at least I know what it was plus only had to pay mechanical insurance excess. Everything else looks good, however a new belt will be fitted. This is a bit disappointing because the car has only covered 80,000kms (48,000 miles). Oh well, still loving it!

Forgot about that one, have a look at https://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index...re.267709/ for more information, checked mine before the engine install and it was OK...
