Am I mad to even consider this ...

I've been offered a high mileage 2012 D4 (200k Shocked ) for £5k

Looks to be in good condition from the pictures, HSE model with full supplying main dealer history.

My method of thinking is that at 200k a lot of the usual problem parts have probably been replaced by now, and if the crank has lasted this long has it more chance of lasting a good bit longer.

or should I be running as fast as possible in the opposite direction Whistle

Doesn't sound like an absolute bargain but probably not bad.

I think the crank is a lottery from what I've read over the years. If it does everything it should and had had all the important things sorted as it's needed them I'm not sure the milage is the main thing on one of these.

Mine has recently passed 140k. I do around 10 per year and paid £5500 for it (2010). If I get a couple of years out of it without any disasters then after that I feel it doesn't owe me anything. Most newer purchases would lose 2.5k a year at very least.

I'm coming at this from a different perspective:

Our D3 did 299k before it was laid to rest due to corrosion but was still going strong

Our first D4 (late 62, ie 13MY) is on 160k and is more ikely to die due to corrosion than anything else I drive it daily, and dont worry about the crank - s41t happens is my view. It is worth more than £5k to me/us, and even if the crank did go I would replace it with like for like in a heartbeat.

Our second D4 (16MY) is but a baby on 80k as we only bought it earlier this year (when it was less than 70k)

Personally I would be more concerned about the health of the chassis and sills than the engine. £5k is a cheap car these days, whatever the make model!

You don’t have to be mad, but it certainly helps! Whistle
