Main Dealer Rates Filtering Down To Independents?
I resonantly had some warranty work done at my local Main Dealer and was shocked to find that their hourly labour rate was £150!!
I did most stuff on my D3 myself but didn't fancy tackling a couple of larger jobs and used my local independent, no issues and the jobs were completed fine.
This was just over 2 years ago when their hourly rate was £60.
I've just used them to do the latest service on the D4 and their hourly rate has grown somewhat to £90!!
Can't help but think that an inflation rate of 50% was easier to implement due to the local competition Discovery 4 HSE

Local Indy near me advertises that he’s up to 50% cheaper than the main dealer yet when you call him for a quote on a service he barely comes in at a tenner cheaper.

£45 an hour for me vs. c. £130 at main dealer - plus added benefit of being able to talk to the knowledgeable guy (or sometimes girl at indy I use) who actually works on the car

The hourly rate wouldn't be so bad if they didn't quote such dubious amounts of time to do things.
Was recently quoted 2 hours for front and rear pads, when in reality a skilled mechanic with a ramp and tools would probably do it under 30 minutes!!
It takes me less than 2 hours with a trolley jack and basic tools.
That option is not available to everybody so nearly £300 for a break pad change is somewhat extortionate Discovery 4 HSE

Possible North / South divide? - guys I go to are in a scruffy back street in Stockport - great garage though
My local indi is £91/hour and they're fully booked weeks in advance. I'm going to have to start doing some work myself such as interim services.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

The problem is, costs go up and the law changes.
Where I work we now have bins for
oily rags and paper
used filters
used aerosol cans
waste oil
waste coolant
scrap metal
waste cardboard
and er rubbish
The amount of rubbish generated by a workshop is amazing
Add in the guys wages/rent/rates etc etc

TVLR in gateshead are £85ph. They aren't much cheaper than Stratstone (the only dealers in the area) job for job, but I use them mainly 'cos they're more honest and flexible and don't have corporate targets to meet.

Sure we can all argue that it can be done quickly, I have a ramp and I'm 100% sure someone doing front and rear in 30 mins wouldn't be working to the standard I would want.IID PRO

Have you tried Durham 4x4 they recently quoted me these service prices;- 3rd service £219. 4th service £318. 5th service £344 all inc vat etc
I am also thinking of using TVLR as I bought my previous car FL2 from stratstone and wasn’t impressed

I have used TVLR in Gateshead for a long time now, I've known David from his North Eastern Motors days, and rate them very highly. You can get a courtesy car from them (It's not a flashy LR model but you're not paying for that) and on numerous occasions I've dropped in unannounced with a problem and they've had it sorted in no time. Another highly recommended independent is Mastora in Alnwick, top class service from Vicky and the boys and they support our Mountain Rescue Team Their calendars also have some excellent photos in them Cheers Ian

Yes, I tried Durham4x4 a while back for a gearbox flush. They weren't able to do it 'cos the machine broke down. They were going to phone me to rearrange when it was fixed, but never did. I went elsewhere
