How many cans of Plastidip ?

Off-road/winters are coming off shortly and probably going to (finally get round to ) spraying them Matt black.Im still not convinced I won't be forever touching up the coating due to aforementioned off roading but going to do it anyway....I assume a couple of coats should do it,so how much do I need roughly ?

A set I had for the D3 were just done in matt black spray paint by the previous owner, probably easier to touch up rather than plastidip if it is what it sounds like. Navigator has my old wheels, ask him for a photo, I thought they looked ok and I never needed to touch up

To be safe go with 4 cans.

You might be able to get away with 3 and it look ok but you really want a layer thicker than you might think you need.

If the layer is too thin then it looses any of its shock absorbancy properties and stone chips are much more likely. Also if you need to peel a layer off an area to do a repair/touch up then you want a slightly thicker coating. If it's too thin it can actually be a beggar to peel off, an extra mm of coating will make the whole management of the surface a lot easier.

I plastidipped my 17" wheels matt black. I did 6 coats per wheel, and used almost 3 cans.

I'd say 3 cans is enough. But get 4 cans so you have 1 can left over to touch up any offroad damage.

Thanks, only asking as I'm having mine done locally by the bloke who tinted my windows. £30 per wheel, so double the cost of doing it yourself.....but then I'll know it'll be done properly, I've never had the patience to spay properly always end up with great big dollops of paint everywhere. Sad

Cheers

Oh btw, I plastidipped with the wheels still on the D3, just put a garbage bag around the brake discs and masked the valve stem and wheel nuts. This means I only plastidipped the front face. The "barrel" of the wheel is not plastidipped. It doesn't show unless you look hard, and when it gets covered in brake dust it probably won't show even if you looked.

If you intend to plastidip the entire rim, front and "barrel" then you will need at least 4 cans.

Hi,
New to LR from Volvo, and looking forward to getting my new XS next week (was built yesterday!!!), I was planning on getting the wheels powdercoated for £240 or plastidipped. I quite like the idea of peeling the stuff plasti off if I get bored with the white and black pack look - how easy is it to remove and go back to silver alloy. Does it damage the original colour?

Thanks

Richard

Nope, plastidip does not damage the original colour. It actually protects it.

Unless you apply a very thin layer, it is easy to peel off. If you apply a sufficiently thick layer, it should come off in large chunks once you start peeling it.
