Most of my milage is motorway so not too much braking.

It was more the pads and discs at the same time just doesn't feel right to me, I have had several BMs and a D3 for years and have never known pads and discs to have the same life span, to me it seems the pads are too hard

I do brakes myself. If I'm going to the trouble of stripping things down to do the pads, the extra work to do the discs is minimal. Less than £100 a pair for the discs mean I might as well do them whilst the car is in bits.
