Max tread difference on one axle?
I have a set Goodyear Wrangler Mt's with my G4? 255 x 55 x 19 The fronts have about 6 mm tread left and the rear 7mm. I now damaged one off the rear tyres, I got a piece off wood between the rim and tyre and this damaged the sealing area. It took a piece of rubber out just over the sealing area.
I got a spare that still has about 12mm thread left. Is it acceptable to have a tyre with 12 mm and 7 mm on the rear axle?
How much tread depth difference can you have between the front and the rear tyres?
What is the tread depth of a new wrangler MT?Roel

Sorry, don't know the answer to the tread difference.
BUT, if you do use it and the D3 doesn't like it, it'll only change up to 4th as a precaution.
You can then manually shift to a higher gear.
But remember that's the D3's way of telling you something, so I'd get it off as soon as poss.I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Alternatively. Get one new MTR on the wheel that had the damaged tyre and put bot the new tyres on the same axle, put the 7mm tyre as the spare. Just a thought.
I think new depth is 12mm.

I might have to be 1 new tyre or even 3? Because what is allowed to have as thread depth difference between the front axle and the rear?
Does anyone has experience with this. Or am I the first that damaged a tyre?Roel

I'm sure a real expert will be along soon, but in the meantime...
I know that in softroader 4x4 systems such differences (and lesser differences too) have led to failure of the viscous coupling.
You have a real 4x4 though so this shouldn't be a problem
Doesn't the space saver spare have a different rolling diameter than the other wheels? If the D3 can cope with that then a few mm shouldn't be a big issue.
Having said that when I had this same total loss of a tyre but on the front axle, the new full tread tyre caused the arrow on the satnav to point at 10o'clock rather than straight ahead. I can't recall any other difference other than lighter steering tho.Dr. Ian Malcolm:
