Meanwhile, on the other side of the world....

So, a few months ago, while you were all posting photos of your Landys out in the snow, we were having a glorious summer.

Well, now the roles have reversed. Winter is definitely starting to bite here. This is my D4 today on Arthur’s Pass, one of our main alpine passes.

Unfortunately, it’s not me who got to play, as I have lent the car to one of my staff, who has his parents out from the US and is showing them a little of our lovely country!

Still, I hope the weather in the UK does stay lovely, as I will be there in 3 weeks and would like to enjoy it!

Now departed: '85 RR Vogue, '94 D1, '95 D1, '70 SIIA, '97 D1, '04 D2a. All V8, except for the SIIA - but that drank as much petrol anyway!

Yeah I know (I was born near Levin).

However, the Swanndri name is used to describe anything vaguely like that - in the same way that Americans hoover, or the UK lux (I think). Down here, we just vacuum. Rolling with laughter

I am a bit of a Kiwi (born there to foreign parents), and having been to Arthur's Pass in the summer, it's nice to see photos from the winter. I am also curious about your wheels and chains...I am interested in getting chains for my D4, but I have held off because of the uncertainty regarding the wheel sizes. In the winter I am using compomotive wheels with 255/60/18 tires, which I believe is stock size. But most manufacturers do not specify if their chains will fit. LR also only recommends their own version. I would love to get some of the quick on, quick off options from Thule, but there is so little information out there. What is it you are using? Have you had any issues with clearance?

Hi Stuart.

It certainly is a beautiful part of the world. We used to go over there a lot, as we lived in Christchurch and my wife’s family were in Greymouth. It’s one of the best roads to drive. Very Happy

I’ve never had problems getting chains for any of my Discos. This one has 225 55 19 tyres. I just went to a specialist chain supplier, as I have more confidence than the local auto parts sell everything shops. Clearance is really good. If in doubt, ask for a test fit.

I did look at the Thules as they look very nice, but down here the price tag is horrendous. Given they may only get used once every couple of years, as normally the snow is not heavy enough for anything more than the Disco’s natural abilities, I couldn’t justify spending nearly $1,000 on chains. Shocked

I can’t remember what brand my chains are, and the car is still with the guy I lent it to so I can’t check. But I think they were just a generic brand, probably from an Asian manufacturer. They are a good quality though.

Ok, thanks, that is helpful. Chains are not common here, but nearly everyone who lives in the countryside uses studded tires. Last winter I slid backwards down a mountain...luckily into a snow bank and I was able to get myself out alone. But it scared the living daylights out of me, so I decided to look into chains. I will be moving to the countryside where it freezes often, and my place has a fairly steep hill that gets very icy. Still, studded tires are loud and bad for the environment, as well as unnecessary 90% of the time here, so I would prefer not to have them. Having chains that can easily pop on and pop off would be ideal for me, but unfortunately no one in the country sells them, so if I bought them I would have to more or less do it sight unseen. In any case, I am glad you did not have any issues, as the official LR standpoint seems to be that none will work other than their own versions.

P.S. Regarding Arthur's Pass, last time I was there I was driving a Kea, haha.

Those are amazing birds! They will eat anything they can, countless rental cars have been destroyed!

When I get the car back, I’ll let you know what brand the chains were. You never know, they may be available.

Hi Stuart,

Finally have the D4 back. These are the chains I have.

They are a generic brand, so not sure if you can get them over there or not.

Something like this may be similar?

Stuart
I have Spykes Spyders. Mount the plates at the start of the season, and then only 1 minute each sode to put the chains on, 30 seconds to get them off.
Cost about 65% of LR own.
