Metal parts hanging in front of rear bumper

Hi,
Can someone tell me why there is casted metal parts hanging in just of the rear bumper, next to exhaust pipe ends? One in both sides of the car, each about 1,5 litres. Is it something to avoid resonance vibratons or save the exhaust pipe in a rocky terrain or what?
