Metallic Scrapping Noise
I have just had my 1st service & complained about a metallic scrapping noise at low speeds. Braking had no effect on the noise. Even tried at low speed to switch engine off and the noise was still evident whilst coasting.
Reply was that it was the rear diff & that they want to replace (17,000km). My 1st question was 'Will it be replaced with a new or reconditioned part?' Answer.... 'A diff Reconditioned by LR'. Is this normal practice or should I insist on a brand new diff? (I bought a new car so why must I accept a used replacement part?) Ren Colyn

If the car is under warranty I feel they should have to replace with new. Are you sure the noise is diff related . That was the original diagnosis on my car and it turned out to be the bump stops that needed greasing
Could be a drive shaft.Loving the power of the TDV8!

Apparently they diagnosed the problem using 'Chassis Ears' which is like a stethoscope attached to the various components whilst they drive the vehicle.
Would not be possible to check the drive shaft though which is a moving part.
Heine just clarify the 'bump stops' ??Ren Colyn

They control the turning radius of the front wheels . Not sure why they need greasing , I'm sure someone can give you a more detailed explanation .

Thanks Heine, those I have greased, all 4, but that grinding noise only comes to life on full lock whereas the present noise is there at all times & actually sounds like a brake shoe touching the brake drum. Just a constant scrapping noise audible with your foot off the accelerator and coasting.
Found a similar thread under tech forum and Wiggs also had his diff replaced.Ren Colyn

OK mine only did it when turning , hence why they thought it was the diff
I had exactly the same diagnosis following the metallic noises, again with their electronic ears. I am currently waiting for a new diff to arrives, it been 2 weeks now, I just hope the noisy diff holds out.

They did on mine (same dealer Moosy went to) but t was not the fault.
My noise appears top be the same as described above but its quite quiet and not always apparent depending on road noise.
Will have my expert tech look into it when its serviced soon and then go to the dealer and ask them to sort under warranty.

Official reply from LR SA! An excerpt from their Warranty Policies and Procedures Manual which is only available to dealers, not owners!
"Exchange Parts (Except Audio / Communication / Navigation)
New parts must be used for repairs during the pre-sale period and up to the vehicle's first 3 months or 3000 miles / 5000 kilometres in service. Thereafter, genuine Land Rover exchange parts must be installed where an exchange scheme exists."
"Local remanufactured parts are to be utilised in the event of no availability of supplies from the UK, and for cost effective solution for customer paid repairs."
So I guess this means if we have a blown engine, turbo, gearbox, compressor etc etc we get 2nd hand reconditioned replacement parts.
At least they can advise us of this before we purchase the vehicle!Ren Colyn

I've had two BMW's from new, they have always used new factory parts, presumed the same for LR, had rear suspension rubber below replaced recently, and they used second hand part.Disco4 SDV6 HSE 2013, Faultmate MVS2.

Either way your warranty will still be valid and if out of warranty your 'new' part will be covered for failure as long as a new part would be.
The repair is warranted I believe not the part.
