Ah well - slight change of plan. The very nice man at Costco (Aberdeen) advised that my existing tyres are nearer 5.5mm than 3mm so suggested I wait until the next offer in March / April time - told me not to waste my money just now. Confirmed that there is no issue with topping up with air, as we already had deduced.

I heard nitrogen is quieter ride, which I would assume is to do with its density or pressure changes when heated as the tyres warm up.

Allegedly car makers often use nitrogen in cars they send off to journalists for testing for this reason...
