IMO completely pointless law, it only make sence if it included the 3rd lane as well but no government will do that as it then begs the question why so slow a speed limit!!
New law to hit that only indicate when returning to a left hand lane but not when pulling out please.Series 1 V8

Or a Truck in the inside lane at 56 mph being overtaken by a Truck doing 56.3 mph - even worse when on a dual carriageway.

Not sure that's true, thought the law was related to not moving in when possible, regardless of lane, even if not, the offence of careless driving or driving without due consideration could still be used.Sill protection - LED internal lights - LED reverse lights - boot liner - Dog Guard - Rock sliders

The police always refer to them as Lane 1, Lane 2, Lane 3 etc.

How about restrict lane one to trucks only. If your truck can't do 56mph, then not allowed on motorway at busiest times.
Lanes 2 and 3 (4) cars only.
Lane discipline is horrible in the UK, but we also have the densest traffic volume. The problem is that everyone wants to overtake the car in front, who also wants to overtake the car in front, and so on.
I don't think driver education is the be all and end all answer. All those that are sitting in lane 3 getting angry at the car in front not pulling over to let them pass know damn well that they are also supposed to pull over and let the car behind them pass.
I don't know the answer.

There is also the problem that folks think they are doing 70mph because that's wot their speedo says however using GPS they may find their speedo is 4 or 5 mph slow.
Don't you hate the way the French indicate for kilometre after kilometre while doing an overtake - that annoys me a tad Stew,

Twice recently we've driven from Cumbria to the South Coast and I noticed that there was a marked increase in the number of cars undertaking on motorways and dual carriageways.
It almost seemed that it was OK and normal to undertake cars in the middle or third lane
Then there are the drivers who sit constantly in the third lane regardless because that's what they did in other country's.

Me and my missus did Route 66 this year.
2000 miles Chicago to LA......
I thought the yanks lane discipline was OK. Occasional dive across for a late exit.
Frightening when you get an eighteen wheeler each side at about 80 ish though.
Saw some nice stuff though......

I was in the USA a few years ago west coast and east coast and I'd have to say impeccable driving/ lane control/ speed control and keeping distance between car in front. I've never seen anything close anywhere in Europe.
