Research results - mud tyres

I can now confirm results of the mud vs standard tyres in wet conditions - the standard tyres performed poorly on steep inclines compared to the STT's and BFG's of the other vehicles. Although these vehicles still had to give a lot of power to reach the top of a realy slippery incline !!!

If any prizes were awarded - I would've awarded first price to Richard who proved that even a D3 with all electronic wizardry can perform a doughnut in a mudpool - so he will be off to LR R&D to add another mode to the terrain response programmes - The doughnut mode Rolling with laughter

Thanks Heine - had as much fun as a mud wrestling match - well almost Laughing

Lots of fun, thanks guys!
Appreciate you guys arriving early so I could join you, even though it was only for 1.5 hours.
Thanks also for the lesson - doesn't matter what gear you have if you don't have skill Thumbs Up Took me a long time to get up that second slope....

I have only ever seen slippery snot like that in Pongola. What a mess. Very Happy We should take a couple of tyre manufacturers there to test their wares.

That guy in the D2 was suicidal. Did he hurt his vehicle? Hope there were no more casualties

I posted a couple of pics in my gallery (nothing very exciting), but hope to see Heine's video very soon Smile Smile

Hey it was great fun and I believe Heine recorded a “perma grin” after I succeeded to get a D3 to do a doughnut with the inside front wheel standing in one place, Very Happy many a pro would have been proud. I don’t think we should pass that footage to LR or their R&D. Whistle

What I can say my “Perma grin” saw its ass when I started the restoration effort. Censored There is mud / clay every where. I cleared mud for 3 hours on Sat and 2 on Sunday. Just finished in time for the "moerse" game a long Jack & Daniel accompanied me to the coach. Wink

I have just looked at some of the pic’s and there is a slight grin but that’s it.
Deon the The doughnut mode is available just not marked nor explained by LR Rolling with laughter

Appendices to LR D3 User manual: Doughnut mode

Engage low range 2
Disable DSC
Set to normal terrain mode
Accelerate 50 % in a straight line
Turn steering 50% clock or anti clock
As the back comes around
More gas (Heine more porridge)
Turn the steering further and control it with power and steering
Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I have loaded some pics the rest will come tomorrow Mr. Green I will post the rest of the pics and let you know.

D3 off-road performance

This was my first real off-road experience with the D3 and we had ample opportunity to test capabilities and to compare. Thumbs Up

Firstly, I am amazed with the way the D3 performs with apparant ease and little power/force. This realy supports LR's motto of treading lightly. Hill descent control is very evident when operating with a lot of noise which according to the manual is normal. The interesting part is going downhill with hdc on and transmission in neutral as it works only on traction control and abs and not via drivetrain.

The tyre issue has now been flogged to death, so with a set of aggressive rubber the experience will even be better.

Lastly - it would have been nice if LR actualy takes you on a REAL off-road experience one the D3 has been purchased with knowledgable people. I wonder how many D3 owners will ever get to use the awesome off-road capabilities of this vehicle Question
