Do you think there is actually going to be a new Defender?
If I was running a brand, I wouldn't be stopping production of the old model and having nothing to replace it with for a few years - that puts the purchaser off to the opposition and they might never come back again. Certainly I wouldn't be prioritising other models that could have waited another year or two (disco Sport) until I had my Defender replacement launched.
There are three families - 3 in the RR, now 2 in the Discovery and .....oh NONE in the Defender. Maybe going forward there are actually only two families and PR would not allow LR to tell us this.
Maybe this is just a jaundiced view, but we should be seeing something more positive than the concepts by now if there was really going to be a replacement. We are seeing D5 drawings/mules and that is for a launch a year away. Are LR really going to leave the Defender brand for 2+ years and then expect customers to return?
Just a thought....

When you look at the numbers being sold, the Defender is way down at the bottom of the JLR list and hence not that important to them.
There will be a "Defender replacement" of sorts; I am 100% certain. LR won't just throw out the market, and it's an extremely popular vehicle (in culture, if not sales). It may prove to be more like a "D3 replacement", but there will be one. My Mrs didn't like the D3 when it came out as she thought it was a bit tonka toy. I wasn't sure but once I'd pulled one about at the dealers I was sold on it. I got used to it's looks almost immediately. I think the same will be the case with the D5. I can't see LR making it any less of a car than what exists now.FFRR 2017 4.4SDV8 Autobiography. The thing to remember is the new "Defender" will not be the same as the old one. If they get it right, and price it correctly, there's no reason it shouldn't be a big seller. Applying the Land Rover/Defender brand to such a vehicle is a great opportunity for LR to take advantage of, hopefully, without some/many/all of the drawbacks of the current Defender.
What's really needed at the utility end is something to compete with the cheap Japanese vehicles that many are turning to - a reduction in price would be a game changer for LR in the utility market. Perhaps "Defender" will become the new Disco Commercial. A stripped out, hose-out Disco 5 would be an interesting prospect. But it will still be expensive when compared to competitors' "working vehicles".
Decent (heated) seats, air suspension, air con and a reasonable stereo and I'd seriously consider a "working D5" version.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Remember the first view of the D3 (in silver) , looked like a van, ugly, so much so bought an RRS.
However it was a design leader in space and practicality, won many awards for such.
Lets hope the function over form is retained in the next model Discovery for which it has built its reputation and loyal followers on and makes it unique within the car world.

For what it is, I would say I dislike it "Paul Daniels style", but as a Discovery, I have to be more critical of it's suitability also, and once this is accounted for I really don't like it, but more importantly, have founded doubts about it's practicality.
