Getafix: How about a picture or a link regarding the jerry-can/ spare carrier?

It would be Bow down appreciated!

I'm heading into the Kaokoveld, Namibia and will have to be carrying my second spare and at least 5x diesel Jerry cans on the roof. .. tents ...
plus water.

I am considering the rear wheel carrier solution to lower my point of gravity.

Last year we had no problems in the Linyanti swamps, but this time we need to carry much more water.

If you remove the middle seat (6 bolts) you can install 2 x 40litre plastic water tanks there. I have done this in the past (also for Kaokoveld trip) and it works great. The units you buy from Makro are just perfect, and the outlet pipes fit just fine under the seats and out the doors when you need them
Alternatively, a les-intrusive solution (which I just used in my trip to Bots) is to slip in the 50litre water tank in the footwell, but this won't work if you have anyone over 9 years old in the rear seats. With my 2 kids (and a 40litre engel in the centre) this works great

I have a 75 lt long range tank, which does not hang as low as the pics I have
seen of the FR one. 60 lt internal water tank, and with centre seat removed, fitted fridge.
My roof top tent days are over, trying climb down in the middle of the night for a p Censored s
on a ice cold ladder, is not my way of fun.
I changed to awings, which could be coverted to tents if needed. In some area's it could
be a problem with roaming animals, but we choose where we would like to go. Still preferr the open
air and see the stars from my bed. Some thing I have found very usefull, is the canvass bags
used for amo boxes. They come in dubble and tripple box sizes, rip stop canvass, dubble zip and
velcro for sealing. Put bedding, clothes and awing side walls in them on tuli trip, stayed clean
and dry. Of course on the roof rack, which I like to pack as light as possible.
A roller drawer system is a must IMHO, it just makes life easer.

I can vouch for these bags - bought from Frontrunner - the are genuinely dust and water proof, unlike others promising this (specialy the ones from Makro which are totaly useless) . I had all the clothing bags inside two of them on our recent trip and heavy dust, mud, rain did not penetrate.

OK, what about a different solution. For trips, remove the rear seats (3rd row) and fit a flush custom made tank in the space and then pack on top with whatever solution you normally use (load platform, drawers, whatever). This would have the advantage of utilising some completely wasted space, would keep the load lowish and would pull the load forward a bit relative to the existing LR tank in the place of the spare. I guess there are a couple of issues though. 1. I understand removing the rear seats is not a 5 minute job. But for a trip once a year or so perhaps this is not a train smash. 2. Venting - clearly the tank would need to be vented to the outside to avoid fumes in the vehicle, but surely this would not be too hard? 3. Who the hell could make up such a solution? Perhaps AluCab. Just had a good experience with them custom-making a rear load platform solution for me.

I have a V8, so range is an issue long before worrying about Angola. Just did a trip through a bunch of back roads in the Karoo and had to think carefully about route planning to avoid a long wait beside the track (not to mention lots of sideways glances from the passenger seat as the fuel gauge was heading south). Anyone fancy trading a nice looking V8 with only a few Kalahari stripes for one of those diesel monsters with 800km range out of the box...?

Just looked at Discoeast's gallery. From what I can see you have done what I mentioned re removing the rear seats, but for a water tank rather than a fuel tank. Do you see any reason why it would not be possible to do the same for fuel? Did you do all this yourself - looks like great work.

Yes nickm, self made, but an internal diesel tank Whistle
I don't think so.
Firstly have you ever traveled with a smelly jerry can
in the confines of your vehicle, secondly, and most scary is
the fire hazard.One leak and kobooom.
Unless the tank could be completely isolated from the interior of
your vehicle IMHO is not practical .I would steer clear of it.
But on a lighter note, thank you for your kind comments
on my handy work, there was not much available for the D3
in off road market a year ago. I had to use my own imagination.
We D3 owners are creative bunch of people, if you can't buy it,
make it.

EGR blanking

Hi heine,
I did the egr blanking myself, got very good info on the forum.
My D3 is a Jan 07, with 28000km on the clock, when I read the post, It just
made sense to me. The steelers have not been told, and do not intend to tell them.
From the out side you can not see it, they would have to open it up.
The process is very simple, remove intake butterfly from shaft, fit stainless
steel blank plates, and the ECM is none the wiser.
My view is, with the egr's blanked, no exhaust gases will flow through the egr valves,
thus stopping any carbon build up to fowl them. No carbon build up = no jammed egr =
no power problems and no waiting for replacement parts.
Mine being an auto, has a better pull off response, can't see much in the way of better
fuel consumption. I would say the main reason for the change, is keeping the exhaust
gases out of the inlet manifold, carbon deposits are not welcome there, and clean air
means better combustion in my book.You could all most say a long term preventive
maintenance plan on your engine.
I did'nt go into too much detail on the proceedure, if you need more, just buzz me.

I'm not a custom auto fabricator by trade, and can not compare my work to the
pro's.
But I'm handy with my hands, it's a hobby and can't charge others, I'll
rather help where i can for free Whistle few beers, a braai, and one
