Mot fail

Hi

Quick question if i may please as I know there’s many here who are well clued up

Mine failed because the door lock decided to fail whilst being tested so door jammed shut , immediate fail

( since then , got the door open and unscrewed the panel and ordered a new actuator )

Mot runs out officially on the 27th july, but believe because it’s failed that date doesn’t apply

Is parked on my driveway and of course it won’t move until I fix the lock and call for the re test , they advised me I’ve got 10 x working days to get it back to them

Do I have to SORN it or advise my ins company plse , or don’t have to until it gets past the 27th july ???

Apogises asking the questions but trying to decipher the new regs if I have to SORN it or not

Thks as always and most appreciated as I want to make sure I stay within the law and not get into trouble Bow down Thumbs Up

I interpreted the new rules as if it fails then it automatically cancels out the current mot.

Whether you have a valid MOT or not, the car should not be driven in an unroadworthy condition...

As for your situation, its a very grey area, as you still have a certificate stating the MOT is valid until 27th July...

Your current mot is now void as the vehicle is classed as unsafe to be on the road, even over something as stupid as rear door lock,
Could it not be opened using the dash switch procedure?

Thks guys Thumbs Up

Certainally won’t drive it and it will remain on my drive only time it will move is to the pre booked mot retest

This is indeed what I’m unsure of ref the dates mot to the 27th july ???

Suppose I’m worried of getting a fine through the door or lifted because of the mot

Just ensuring I remain on the side of the law , have until the 3rd aug which is the 10 x working days and also wondering if I call them and then they say sorry we can’t get u in for another 3-4 weeks in where I stand

As they said when I booked the original mot in they said they’re booked at least a month in advance

It is still taxed and insured

You don't need a valid MOT to have the car parked on your path and of course you don't need one while being driven to a test station for a pre booked appointment.

If the vehicle is still taxed then it doesn't need to be SORN. But if it is taxed then it must be insured.

Should the tax have expired then you must SORN it to avoid the penalty letter. However as we are "mid month" presumably there is still valid tax on it until at least 31st July or perhaps even later in the year. Thumbs Up

If you get close to the 10 days just unplug the lock. I assume its always unlocked then? And go get an mot.

Or if tax is due. Get it taxed near the end of month when mot still valid.

I don't think you can sorn it and then tax if a few days later. I think you may need to wait 10 days?

Many thks Thumbs Up

They rang me to tell me it had failed and wanted to charge me £100 for diagnostics and also will damage the panel because they couldn’t open the door

They quoted me £500 to replace the lock

Advised them to not touch it and I got a cab to them , main JLR dealer

Then drove it directly home, ( yeh i know )

I spent 10-15 with a combination of the door handles and dashboard switch and door opened , with the door opened, I removed door panel and ordered a new door actuator Thumbs Up

The only down side is that without a valid MOT, your Insurers may reduce any total loss settlement if it was stolen, although with you having a failure notice showing what the fault was you would hope they would be fair as at least there is a recent inspection which shows the rest of the car was ok. Thumbs Up

It won't get taken if not on public highway.

What does the "check my MoT" site say?

Thks, wonder if they can be pedantic if I did that , saying I could always plug it back in and therefore not being able to be opened again ???

Still, ordered a new actuator and should be here tues weds so should have it done by this week which gives me next week to get it retested

Assume I’ve got to pay again for the re test

Taxed and ins till nov 2018

Thks, the failure isn’t logged , just says mot expires 27th july 2018 Thumbs Up

Don’t know if they log it or wait till the 10 x working days has lapsed , which by that time will have it back with them

I think that's why you need to get it done within 10 days as they only inspect what failed and hopefully free.

Probably best to refit door card though. I assume the manual lock works on inside
