MOT Failure

On Monday I took my car into my local Land Rover main dealer for its annual service. The health check came back fine with no items needing fixing. Mechanic in his video said the tyres are all in fine condition and the car itself is in great condition. Hoorah!

On Tuesday I took it down my local council's motor depot for it's MOT. I always take it there as there is no incentive to fail the car as they are not getting any work out of it. I've always found them to be fair.

The car failed on two counts. The NSF tyre has two cuts, one on the inner wall edge which is cut through to the core and another on the same tread in the centre also cut through to the cord. The cuts are far enough apart that if the tyre was on one cut you would see the other.

The second point of failure was the NSR brake line is corroded. If the car is on the ground and you look in where it's clipped to the chassis it is very corroded. The other three lines are fine.

Checking my Vehicle Inspection Report from the Land Rover dealer they only check brake hoses and not lines. I did ask the MOT inspector if a mechanic would see this and he said a good one should.

Should I take this up with the servicing manager or am I asking too much seeing as mistakes happen and people miss things. Happy for the MOT tester to pick it up as I assume if it leaks I lose brake pressure.

With my cynical hat on I am surprised your local LR dealer did not pick up these problems as it is easy work for them and a dent to your wallet. But maybe they are too busy Whistle

It is worth having a discussion with the Service Manager but I don't think you will get very far with him/her as they will have a reason (excuse) why these items are not on the "check list"

The car is 5 years old but no, it doesn't go into the sea!

It was the NSR pipe that was corroded and it was where the pipe is clipped to the chassis.

It doesn't show much for their procedures if they miss these. I did think about writing to LR as the dealers seem to dislike this but on balance have left it. However it was its last service as part of the 5 year service package and it won't be going anywhere near their facility again.

What tyres are the cuts on? Had to replace three tyres on mine which were GG AT3's 275 45 20 and had only done a few thousand miles.

Sorry not to actually answer the question (I form on this, according to the wife) but adding a comment here. Given your location in Midlothian, perhaps an independent such as Andy White in Edinburgh would be worth considering, I had a series of disappointments with main dealer servicing in the area such that I wouldn't go back to them. Or Disco Mike up in Dundee since he's already replied... a two hour drive down the road for me these days but worth every mile of it.

I can understand your reason for dropping it, but on the other hand, if JLR don't know of these issues they cannot work to resolve them. JLR may just ignore the issue, but if they want to build a brand that has a great reputation official dealers are their major customer interface, so need to be held to account and raise standards.

I'm probably not the best person to comment on this as I've actively avoided main dealers and stick with independants, but for many who never open the bonnet of their car the main dealers are their only reference point.

Regards,
Steve

I had the gearbox and new brakes put on by DiscoMikey up in Dundee last month and the brakepipe repair done at White Autoservices. It'll be the last time the car is at a main dealers.

It's a fair point, perhaps I should write to Land Rover.
