mpg towing a caravan ?

I am doing my sums for our trip to Spain for five weeks this summer.I have a D4 and I am unsure what figures to use to calculate my mileage whist towing. We carry lots, so the vehicle will have the equivalent of two adults sat in the back, the caravan a Bailey senator will be be around one and half ton. What do you guys reckon you are getting mpg for simular set up ?

A couple of years ago I towed 1700kg caravan down to Portugal. Reckon I got 20 - 22 mpg depending on the terrain. Covered about 2,200 miles. Computer gave 23/24 mpg??!! 2011 D4. Just 2 adults but a fair amount of luggage.

My D4 with a 1500kg 'van gets around 22/23mpg (v 27/28 on its own with normal driving speeds).

BTW my experience (Italy 3 years ago when I had to have the tank drained), and from what I've heard, France / Italy is more prone than the UK to filling stations having poor quality diesel leading to waxing, water in fuel and other issues. Plenty on't interweb about it Thumbs Up

In 30+ years I have never had problems with fuel quality in France or Portugal. Tried testing Autoroute fuel v Supermarket fuel v ordinary fuel stations. No noticeable difference, Price variation sometimes quite marked.

1800kg of twin axle Bailey, pushing on a bit to the south of France with MY16 D4, 18mpg - trip comp showing 20mpg.

A couple of year ago, remapped D3 with same Bailey, trying to keep the speed up on the way back to the ferry - trip comp was showing 17mpg, so in reality around 15 Shocked Shocked

Surprisingly it makes a big difference with the make/style of van, had a Bailey weighing 1600kgs, was getting 20/21 towing a Swift at 1780kgs getting 23 with regularly.

On hilly roads I used to get 18mpg on a relatively flat run motorways etc at the legal limit I was getting 20-22 mpg with a twin axle caravan.
I didn't hang about and worked it hard especially up hill so might have got a little more. a lot depends on your driving style and if you are in a rush or not
