MTR speed rating

Well, just been inspecting my tyres, and reckon in the not too distant future, new boots required Rolling Eyes , so will be looking at Goodyear Wrangler MT/R 255/55/19s, would have liked BF Goodrich A/T's after running them before but they don't go up to 19s.

But my question is, is the speed rating for MTR's the same as standard, as I know when I switched to BFG's on my previous 4x4, they were a lower speed rating, but a quick call to insurers all was ok.

So just curious about the MTR's and if so, hope everyone has declared them to the insurance company, as won't affect premium, but as not spec tyres will give them a get out clause if anything happens.......

Sorry if this has been done before, did make a search but could not find anything....

Cheers

The earlier MTRs were Q rated, they changed to S rated about 6 months ago

My view is that the tyres are the correct load, speed and dimensions for my vehicle, therefore are suitable replacement tyres.
Anyone know of anyone who has replaced their std tyres for a different brand ever failing insurance?
As long as they are within spec & legal for the road, there can be no issue.

I never told my insurance company when I had Goodyear or some other branded tyres instead of the std dunlop by KwikFit on any of my previous cars.

the only reason I mentioned it, was that the BFG were a lower speed rating than the road going tyres my last 4x4 came with - hence I needed to advise my insurance co that the tyres were a lower speed rating than manufacters standard.

maybe on Defender but when LR sells a D3 they put new Pirelli.
I don't know the real reason but i suppose a problem with the speed rating... (s against h)

The load index is the critical issue ......are you really going to suggest to your insurer that because your tyre is only rated to 99mph that it means its under specced ?? Confused

If it means they have a get out clause should anything happen then yes - like I said before, they noted it on the policy and that was that - no increase etc, and fully legal.

If you happen to have a crash on the motorway for example, and inspected to find under-rated speed fitted tyres, very easy for the insurance co to decline a claim Rolling Eyes

They would have to show that the rating of the tyre was a material contributing factor. If you have tyres of the correct load rating but only speed-rated to 99mph and have a stack at 70mph they can't argue the tyres were contributory. If they try, the Ombudsman service will slap them. Thumbs Up
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

So they would still pay out if you crashed doing 99mph then ? Confused

The reason I was given for changing the tyres AND wheels on mine was product liability, as they didn't know if either had hidden damage incurred on the challenge which may be a problem later either as warranty or worse, so played safe and changed it. For the same reason they removed the winch rope and controller, in case they had been damaged (but not the winch Confused )

I have just called my insurance company and as far as they are concerned. There was no need to tell them as I have not changed the wheel size or the tyre size. All I have done is change the tyres for another type of tyre. In fact he said it made made the car safer for the work we do. I then asked for some discount Whistle bet you know what the answer was Big Cry

Just throw this into the pot.

When I bought my MTR's it was when there was a dearth of them. Central Tyre rang Goodyear to see if they could get some, who told them to stress to me that they did not recommend the MTR's for road use. I practically had to sign a disclaimer.
