RS Turbo Escort, once owned by Princess Diana sold for £730k. Bloody ridiculous.
The mint 1973 Rover P5 used in government by Margaret Thatcher sold for £32k and would have tempted me more.

A pal of mine works at that auction house, I guessed it might get £150k and he thought £120k. A stonking result for the owner, and the auctioneer must be over the moon. Great PR for them.
I was born in 1980 and these fast Fords were lusted after by me and all my mates. Now we're in our 40s with spare cash and these 'retro' era things are rising in value hugely. Likewise retro games consoles, art, toys, bikes, CDs and vinyl - all the things about 20-40 years old are being bought up now by those same people who couldn't afford them new at the time.
This was the only Black Series 1 RS turbo ever produced, and with the Royal connection I'm notnl surprise it sold well, but I am surprised it sold THAT well.2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

Ironically, the RS Turbo wasn't that good a car, really. Big lag, then a thump of boost, change up, lag, boost. Rinse, repeat. Brakes weren't great. Interior was classic Ford of the era i.e. not great but no worse than any other hot hatch of the time - none of them wasted money on the interior when making a quick, cheap car.
A mate had one when I was at college. I had a drive in it whilst he drove my 309GTi. He said that the 309 had better handling but he missed the turbo kick. I reckoned he should get his brakes sorted as they were lethal and he agreed that after driving mine, his brakes did feel way underpowered for the car.

Summed it up beautifully. Whoosh then the psssst of the dump valve that was inevitably the first modification that was put on. The only car I've ever driven that had a more ridiculous turbo thump was the Imprezza McRae edition. Had one in 1998 and it was lethally neck-snapping for any unlucky passenger.

The 306 was the next generation to the 309.
The 309 was a slightly longer version of the famous 205 but with basically the same running gear. The 205 was cute and, in 1.6GTi form, a lovely little car. The 205 1.9GTi was just waiting to go through hedges backwards when the driver got carried away with the pace and then chickened out in the corners. The 309, being slightly longer, was more stable. Not quite so nimble, therefore, but you could play with it in to the corners. It rewarded trail braking, a heel-and-toe down change and then power out of the corner. Stayed with some ostensibly quicker cars through the twisties on more than one occasion thanks to its handling. I remember that one "upgrade" for the 309 GTi was fitting the 205 1.9GTi's rear torsion bars. They were slightly thicker - hence the lift off oversteer that the big-engine 205 liked to surprise drivers with. Whilst the 309 had the same engine, I think it had the 1.6GTi's torsion bars which meant the back end was much better behaved.
The 309's big problem was that it was basically ugly next to its cute little sister (the 205).
The 306 was fab. I never had the GTi version of that but even the lesser versions (I had a D Turbo as a company car) had a great chassis. The 306 GTi was, IIRC, fairly universally praised by journos, etc., as a well balanced hot hatch. Enough power to be quick, great handling, and a very pretty looking car. I think the 306, in 3 door versions, was one of the best looking hatchbacks ever. Just a pretty little car.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk
