You need a new mirror or donor mirror to fix. If you fancy spending some cash, get some second hand MY14 onwards mirrors from eBay.

I have a broken mirror, the frame was cracked, If you have a look at yours you I may have the parts required to repair it? or.. more likely, you need a new/ 2nd hand mirror.

The last one I got I bought 2nd hand and prepped and painted myself, came out great..

How difficult is it to remove the full mirror unit and refit a new one?

Are there different part numbers depending on heated/folding/etc.?
 Cheers,

Gareth

It’s quite straight forward. Pull the triangle trim off the door by pulling the top away from the door. Then if you carefully pull it up and away you will see it clipped to the door panel at the bottom. Put a small screw driver down onto the clip to disengage it and lift the panel up enough to undo the elec connector and put the panel to one side.

Next use the small screw driver to push the main mirror connector lock and pull up the harness. This can be a PITA as it’s behind the door card (you could remove the door card but it’s not required). If you have cameras you will have another plug to disconnect.

Next, lower the window and slacken the 3 bolts. They could be corroded so you’ll have to deal with that if required. Then loosen and remove the bottom 2 mirror mounting bolts. Now hold the mirror housing through the open window and remove the 3rd bolt. Carefully pull the mirror away until you can feed the plug through the hole in the door.

Refitting is the opposite of removal with the exception of reconnecting the electrical plug which can be more of a PITA!!

Oh and yes there are dozens of part numbers for differing specs but you can mix and match good parts to make a good one. You can even just replace the motor and gearbox if required.

That all sounds very positive - my problem is I am away at present back in London on Sunday and the car is booked in for service and MOT on Monday -- will it fail the MOT for a faulty passenger side door mirror?

As I read it YES External off side all OK Internal all OK. External near side in place and adjustable but taped up to stop it folding in!

To be honest, to be sure you’re best using Topix or a dealer. The MY14 to 16 has even more variations and I’m not joking when I say they’re are probably 150+ variations. Depending what part you need, sometimes it’s cheaper to buy a low line second hand or new unit off eBay. You can even use LHD versions if the frame of the original isn’t damaged. You can also salvage parts from the L405 and L494 as they are similar with the only real difference being the mounting. Unfortunately you can’t but the mirror housings or frames as separate parts so it’s a whole new unit or salvage a second hand part. The actual mirror can be stripped down in about 5 minutes and even the wiring can be stripped out quite quick. I custom assembled my mirrors from L405 and L319 mirrors as I wanted the auto dimming which only came on the Range Rover.

Thanks for that.

From what I've seen on a cursory glance (need to look properly over the weekend) its only 2 things that are knackered on mine: the built in indicator is full of water and not working & the mirror itself appears to have been snapped off the adjustment motor and glued back in (so it doesn't move, even though you can see the motor moving behind it!)

I'll need to strip it but if I'm lucky, just need to replace indicator & mirror, and at worse also the adjustment motor.

The exterior of the mirror housing is spotless and the powerfold works perfectly so I'm hoping its mostly ok. It doesn't have puddle lights or cameras or any other sensors to worry about.
 Cheers,

Gareth

Just on this, do you only need to swap the mirror unit itself, or are there other elements needed in terms of power/cables/etc. and/or CCF edit?

I have only had auto-dimming on external mirrors once on an A4 some years ago and found it to be a brilliant feature.
 Cheers,

Gareth

It’s the mirror glass, wire, 2 connectors (1 per side) to connect to the mirror glass and then contacts for the door to mirror connector x 2, body to door connector x 2, console to body harness and rear view mirror connector x 2. Where I’ve stated x 2, that’s for left and right connector but you actually need 2 per connector so 4, 2 for each wire required.
