MY14 My 3 week observations

As the title suggests I’ve had the car 3 weeks Corris Grey XS. I previously had a MY11 XS both from new. My old car was a cancelled order so I didn’t spec it. It came with rear camera tow bar and the lighting pack.
When i ordered this one I went with the rear camera and tow ball only. I didn’t feel the extra £500 for the upgrade lighting was worth it; in fact I often used to think the upgraded lighting had not been fitted. How wrong was I? The first night after picking up the car we travelled on some unlit country roads because that where we live. I had travelled no more than a 1/4 mile and stopped to see if my lights were actually working the difference from the old one was that great. I’m now getting used to them but not too happy with the standard ones in fact I’m convinced my wife’s bog standard fiesta lights are better. Still £500 is a lot if you don’t travel on too many unlit roads.
The stop start i was sort of dreading but not a problem especially on motorways. No really it’s not too bad.
8 speed gearbox not noticed any great differences. I keep knocking the paddles but now i know how to return to D not a problem.
Like the DVD player but only to show off.
MPG seems about the same it tells me I’ve done 31mpg actual 27.1
Reversing camera mods great i.e. the zoom feature when connecting tow hitch.
All in all I’m well happy with the car as I was with the other one.

Interesting...

Few thoughts for comparison sakes...

Lights - I went for the Xenons as I was never really happy with the lights on the old Commercial which were horribly dim with a little road grime on them - dead chuffed with the light output from the upgraded lights on the MY14 Commercial.

Stop start - mmmmnn, jury's still out on this one. I accept that I do tend to do fair old motorway miles and it's not an issue here, but equally, have just spent a week diving into small passing bays down tiny Devonian lanes and it's a real pain when you pause to give way to a little old lady who then can't get through the space that you have left for her, only to have to restart, move, stop and (sometimes) complete the whole process in reverse...

The whole exercise is accompanied by the shriek of parking sensors (front and rear) so it's a case of hastily trying to disable everything in order to be a nice considerate driver!

Fuel consumption... currently finding the MY14 dire by comparison with the old model (last of the 6 speeds) and currently running an indicated 4mpg lower than the old vehicle...
 D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY

D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)

Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!

Wales 2014 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 XS Auto Corris GreyDiscovery 4

1 week on and I'm happy with my new MY14 XS Corris Grey so far. Only upgrades are Bi-Xenon lights, split 7-spoke wheels, towing electrics - carried over removable tow ball (from previous 2010 XS Stornoway Grey) and find that it seems to be a better tighter fit in the new car (am aware of other thread here with 'loose' detachable towball issues for some).
Didn't spec full size spare wheel so was expecting space saver but it turns out I got a full size one although the tyre is a Pirelli Scorpion Zero (standard fit on my previous car) whereas all four corners are Good Year Wranglers. Maybe it came as part of the 7 split spoke wheels upgrade? although dealer spotted it and wasn't expecting it, and no extra charge.

8 speed seems much smoother than my old 6 speed TDV6 and fuel economy better too, got a 37.8 today (computer display, not measured) compared to 31ish on similar run with the old car .

Just a couple of niggles I suppose -

Paddles - hitting them at first but now I know they're there, not a problem really.
Stop Start - tend to switch it off when I get home - have to do a '3 point' tack to reverse into parking space, was a bit of a pain with it left on, kept cutting out, would be ok if it waited an extra second or so before shutting down I guess. Same could be said for general traffic, (and country lanes), a second or so extra could avoid unnecessary shutdowns, but getting used to it and where and when to switch it off to make things easier.
Infotainment screen - new system takes longer to boot up on starting and the warning safety message (only had it on the satnav on the old car) that you have to cancel every time on startup takes a bit of getting used to. Better and more comprehensive system than the old one though, multi disc loading good and phone pairing better. Not tried the satnav yet.

im probably 2-3 months in and so far I think its great...different to the sport.

MPG is good solid 34's

Stop start is awful, xenon lighting is just as good as the sports so good overall.
