MY15 2nd battery location

As we now have start/stop sitting in tray 2 where does the leisure battery now go?

Rear air con takes some of the rear near side cubby apparently so unsure as to where it's going to go...

Battery box in the boot strapped to the tie down points seems to be the only real option. Can then be removed if you need the space. Thumbs Up

Yuk Sad

Would rather take one of row 3 seats out and try to make something work under there.

Will the off side take it if you remove the jack and tools gubbins?

I don't think it would TBH.
If you take a seat out, then it would of course. If you are looking to put it under the seat, then I don't think there's enough room at least not for the usual YellowTop or similar.

Once the extra battery went in the old Aux slot, it seems the only option is the battery box in the boot. National Luna to a smart one.

Ah right, no, crossed wires. Wiggs ISTR put his on the Nearside, without rear aircon. The offside doesn't seem to have the same space available. Wiring, release cables etc .

I got fed up with dual battery setup, moving between cars, then with the Freelander had no real options other than remove spare wheel, so went for a power pack instead with built in inverter. It has done everything required and has portability, only downside is to remember to charge it, but you can keep it in boot with charger connected if you want.

Not sure what's actually in the spare tray now, thought it was just a small extra battery, would it be poss to upgrade this to a proper battery and then run some leads off for stand alone power Question Possible the extra split charge system not required if system already in pla e to charge this battery

Been wondering about this for when I change my D4 in a couple of years' time. I agree that a box like the National Luna is probably the way to go (and actually possibly more practical for camping anyway).

Apart from the physical space though, how would the Stop/Start electronics affect the split charge solenoid? Would it be hard to get the 2nd battery charged if the D4 is dropping the voltage down all the time?

Can some one please inform me on what this means ? As if it's a second battery I'd like to do this. "Where does the leisure battery go"

Hi Streffie

It's referring to the fact that on the D3, there was a space left 'spare' to fit a second battery for running things like a fridge, lights, etc. off - especially popular amongst campers/overlanders etc. or those with a winch, where the extra 'oomph' was handy.

You would fit a suitable deep cycle (leisure) battery and a solenoid kit to engage and disengage the battery to either charge it or separate and protect the original battery from discharge as approprite.

On the early D4s (like mine), they snook in a few bits and bobs into this space, such as an ECU for the transfer box. But with a bit of careful 'repacking' you could still move stuff around and get your 2nd battery in.

For later D4s (2014 onwards? Happy to be corrected) LR put even more stuff in this space, including a new small, second battery of its own to support the stop/start system. This pretty much put paid to using this great spare space for a second 'leisure' battery now as there are now more than a few bits to relocate.

Hence the point of this thread, and the reason lots of people moving to later D4s (myself included) will be probably looking to move their 2nd battery solution to the rear of the vehicle.

Whether there is a feasible way of replacing the new LR stop/start battery with a large leisure one that can support both this and also deep-cycle duties is yet to be figured out (as far as I am aware!)

Hope this helps

Thumbs Up

James

Edit: PS - Forgot to add, I also still wornder how the stop/start technology in a newer D4 plays out with a split charge system, does it keep flipping on/off during a journey? I've already overheard a chap complaining at the dealer about how he is struggling to charge his caravan electrics via the tow socket on a new D4.....

I use a National Lunar Battery box with a Yellow top Optima. just sits in the boot and has a cable plugged into the centre console aux power socket. this goes off automatically and the split charge system of the NL box handles all the charging

totally removable and runs my engel fridge etc, and charges just fine Thumbs Up
