I can’t answer this, but are there any clues in the description?
-Turned in R - My MY 16 will automatically put the car in P when I stop it.
-Took the key and reset it? - Not sure what this means but it did the trick in this case.
-My CTEK will advise if battery not recoverable after it’s been on a while (had this on my small stop/start battery), so after 2.5 days what were the CTEK lights showing ? (assuming the 3.8 has lights to show charge progress or a fault?)
-The RAC battery test is normally pretty thorough, testing not only immediate charge but ability to hold it. So if they say it’s good then, as suggested , perhaps it’s something else.

I assume the CTEK was charging? Mine always makes a buzzing noise when first connected to a low battery, and as the battery recovers the buzzing stops. But sometimes I find you have to wiggle the connections to get it to start charging. Just because the lights are on the charger doesn't mean it's actually charging. Mine has four lights in a line and if it's charging it will go the third light within a minute or two. When fully charged the green light comes on. Just a thought.

My D4 16 Landmark is sitting on my drive waiting to be taken to the dealers with a completely dead starter motor. Was working perfectly until last week. We were camping, had taken the tent down, loaded the car and was about to set off when, in the space of 30 minutes the car stopped working - pressed the start button and the engine tried to turn but it failed - we immediately thought it was the battery so jumpstarted thanks to the kind farmer and off we went ....
No problems at all until last night.
Got to a friends house only 5 minutes down the road, switched engine off, pressed the intercom, jumped back in the car and the starter motor wouldn't even turn. Battery/lights/stereo EVERYTHING was working with no dimming but the starter motor wouldn't even turn. No red warning lights, no nothing ....
We were out of LR Assist by 4 months  luckily we had just started AA cover and they have been amazing. They couldn't fix the car so had to be towed to mine. Thankfully was at a friends who fed/watered the kids and we were home by 9.40pm. Could of been a whole lot worse, like yesterday when I had to make a mad dash emergency to the vets with a lurcher who had heatstroke after chasing a deer and didn't know when to stop  All was ok but it could of been much worse. @LT - did you have to fight to get them replaced under warranty? My MY16 has failed to start this evening. I noticed it was weak this morning, bought a CTEK while at work due for delivery tomorrow but this evening it fails to start!

I didn’t have to fight at all. LRA did it all for me, without question under warranty ( the original LR 3 year warranty ).
The main battery was fitted by them at my home. When the smaller start/stop battery failed, the LRA didn’t have one on his van, so he came back with one the following day and fitted it at my office. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

That is good service! I called LRA yesterday and they said I would have to buy a battery from them if they fitted it but then I am in an extended warranty period with LR so perhaps that is the difference?

Yes. Batteries aren’t covered by the LR extended warranty.
I tend to use LRA first rather than go to a main dealer for any issues.
I had the LR extended warranty on my last 2016 D4. It suffered from a sticking actuator on the second turbo. LRA came to my office, diagnosed the fault and booked it in to a local main dealer for me. I was given a brand new Evoque to use whilst a new turbo unit was fitted. No money changed hands, just as well at £4,500 and it was all relatively painless. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

If a battery has been completely flattened, best to reset BMS system after recharging.
Am pretty certain some sort of memory effect comes into play perhaps more so with pre stop start models.
Worth a try as its free and easy and if new battery fitted will still need to complete a BMS reset D4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST
