United Kingdom 2008 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Tangiers OrangeDiscovery 3

Had the following reply from Bailey this morning:

Quote:
Thank you for your email below and I apologise for the late reply.

Whilst the axles may be rated at 1000kgs each the chassis is rated/limited to 1800kgs, therefore you could increase the MTPLM of your caravan by 49kgs to give you 1751kgs+49kgs= 1800kgs.

There is a weight upgrade available for your caravan, the part number is 1190112 which can be ordered through our website, www.bailey-parts.co.uk the cost of which is £63.22.

Interesting thread this one...... I'm following it as it is similar with lorry weights.... I have recently been looking at buying either a horsebox or large horse trailer......and as such have been attending a number of horsey shows looking as to what is on offer..... The salesmen have been frankly outrageous and cavalier in their attitude towards weights....one salesmen saying that it is easy for an average car to pull a box laden with three horses.....despite that the payload would barely allow for the transportation of a small pony....

The lorry sellers were also appalling saying that their 7.5 tonner machines were the perfect machine for us to take horses, plus family plus equipment, saddles water etc ... Upon checking their manufacturers unladen weight most were around 5.5- 6.5 tonnes unladen without a tonne of horse in the back.....
I will estimate that 95% of all 7.5 tonne horseboxes are dangerously overweight out on the road!

I'm now looking to build one and am having to start at an HGV licenced 10 tonner minimum to carry what we intend to safely....

The manufacturers are using the opinion that it was the owners fault for overloading their machines rather than honestly answer questions on the matter! I suppose telling the truth will lose sales and the buyer is more interested in the shiny granite work top rather than it is seriously overloading his new caravan/horsebox......

Some years ago I managed, with considerable ease, to bend one of the drop arms of my caravan axle, but managed to get home. Jacked up the van removed the axle and took to ALKO. They were in Leamington Spa at the time. I had a new new drop arm and uprated rubbers fitted to the axle which was then replated. Took a bit of time to get the caravan manufacturer to supply an upgraded plate for the van

Was subjected to a vosa checkpoint when on the way to Ireland October 2012 with our TD5 Disco and T/A van. To say they were thorough would be a huge under statement, all axle weights and balance checked, nose weight etc. Turned out we were 12kg below rear axle weight on the disco and were advised to shift some weight into the caravan. Our van has been replated based on axle and chassis and now sits at 1950kg, the plate on the van simply has an vinyl sticker over the original weight and VOSA man didn't seem concerned at all. The larger wheels on the caravan, straight liner stabiliser, led side markers (not marked) and chassis corrosion on the Disco were a much bigger deal.

Just stay within axle/chassis limit and of course the cars rating and if our experience is anything to go by then it'll be fine.
