AUD$1845. (approx 11,400 rand I think) for the fridge. Another AUD$149 for the cover.
Well made though! much better than my other fridge was.
The smart power system is a big selling point. And it does only draw up to 2.5A. That comparison ironman sent said the engel was actually drawing 3.5A, not the 2.5A claimed. Several Engel owners here have said the same thing. Have a nice day!

Hi Jamo,
Where did you get the fridge from. Local (Aus) or O/S? Did you think I would leave you crying,
When there's room in my D3 for 7,
Climb in here Joe we'll soon be flying,

Yup that's pretty pricey - you can get them locally for about R7000 - but they are the best around IMHO

RED DISCO,
I got the fridge from the Aust distributer in Welshpool, Perth. Cost only $30 freight to here.
I believe they are also marketed through Opposite Lock. Have a nice day!

Jamo,This is an old topic but let me add... I saw in Perth about 4 years ago at a 4x4 shop a fantastic idea for the 40L Engel. Some inventive sole (must have been an Ozzie ) had made an extension which, after removing the top lid, clamps over the fridge giving it a third more height. The lid then attaches to the extension.
If you then set the temp to -14 or so, the top of the fridge is warmer, running at about +3, ideal for frozen stuff at the bottom & fridge stuff at the top. I have not seen it here in RSA.

I have a 45 Lt WAECO, running from the STD rear plug. The only problem I have had, is when
the engine is off, ignition switched on, the freeze setting will not work and gives the red light.
But cooling side works.
With the engine running, works like a charm on all settings.
I've had it for a year, forgot to change the settings once and had frozen beer. D3 bullbar-spots-roof rack with spots-ladder-long range tank-swing out spare wheel carrier- upgraded tow bar-dash console-internal water tank-duel awnings-drawer system & T T.

I think the std wiring is not thick enough to handle the start up amps , or maybe your battery is a bit tired

Two solutions to your problem
First as Heine mentioned replace the standard cables with thicker ones.
Or take the Weaco to outdoor warehouse Boksburg (Weaco agents) they have a technical workshop and can resolve your problem by replace the alarm module for start-up voltage drop.

I bought my 40lt Engel in 1997 for R2500. Never had a problem but yes it is not insulated as good as the NL. Whith the growing family I needed more space and was looking at the bigger options (65-80lts) I then decided to buy a smaller fridge and went for the Indel 30lt which is marketed and backed up by National Luna. I now put the Engel in the back with all the foodstuffs and keep the 30lt Indel on the middle rear sat with the drinks , works a charm. The little Indel is very well insulated and only needs to run during daytime , it keeps it Temp. during the night so I run the Engel on the 2nd battery and the Indel on "ignition" power. Also on day trips it's nice to have a smaller fridge to tagg along instead of a big fridge. My 2c

Jamo wrote:Well, my new NL Weekender 50 turned up on Friday. Fantastic piece of kit, very quiet and got down to temp very quickly. I have a wireless thermometer inside and the fridge's temp guage is almost spot on. And it draws less than half the power of my old fridge.
Couldn't be happier!
Now that you're been using this for a few months of summer......what's the verdict Jamo ?

Hi Catweasel,
I watched the video link from IronMan's post, last night.
It's refreshing to watch someone with" no axe to grind".
The Engel has thin insulation, but the unique motor system of slow start piston is the go.
It's probably the one to go for and doesn't blow any fuses in aux. attachment since
there's no startup current spike .......unlike conventional motors.

the unit may be thinner but my brothers are able to turn their units of overnight whereas mine (waeco, piece of rubbish) needs to be kept running and one of the fridges used to be the old mans which was purchased in the early eighties.
