Ok plans might have changed a bit.
We might be doing a bit of the NC500 then getting a "base" to explore from.
So the new plan is take a couple of days to get up to John O Groats, spend a day maybe two around there. Then head over to the West coast and use that as a base, probably in a cottage, for a week and a bit. That way we can have a day exploring then a day chilling and so on.
So if anyone has any cottage recommendations that would be well suited to explore the West that would be great, plus somewhere to stay around the John O Groats area for a night or two

So I think we are getting closer to a plan now.
Looks like we will be spending a week on the East coast probably around the Laig/Bonar Bridge area then another week on the west. The west will be as close to Lochinver as possible. From these two bases we will explore the surrounding areas which will consist of full day trips to chilling at base.
So any ideas of things to do would be great
Thanks Andy D4 MY15 SE TECH

The two are only 60 miles apart.
Why not try Grannies Heilan Hame at Embo instead of Lairg/Bonar. There’s more to do there.
Lochinver is okay, but you’ll get round it in five minuets and there’s more Tourists than locals and the locals are incomers (coigreach) on the whole.

NC500 that looks very nice will get SWMBO to have a closer look.
The Dundonian whereabouts is this. Just got my map out but can’t find Embo on it.

It was a lovely cottage and a great base on the east coast but easy to get to the north and west coasts as well. (Y) MY2022 D5 HSE D300 - with extra nice bits added

Find Dornoch in Sutherland about 50 miles north of Inverness on the A9 and go a mile or two north on the coast. First class beach tbh.

Right it’s all booked.
We’ve gone for a cottage on the east coast near Tain and one one the west near Lochinver. Both for a week and will use them as a base to explore. Thanks for all the replies but please still post with things to do and see.

Where’s Lockinver!
Funnily enough I was speaking to an old friend from Tain this morning, took me two hours to get away from him. He told me the place is very quiet now.
Anyway, although you are using it as a base, you could entertain yourself nearby.
1. Nigg Hill and the North Suitor.
2. Balintore.
3. Portmahomack.
4. Tain itself recently got a big Asda, Tesco. It’s a very old town. Worth a donder round particularly the Bakers next to the Royal Hotel - Home made Pizza Slices and Gows next to the Court House for a Dream Ring. MacLeod’s the Hardware Store is one of the biggest Firearms Dealers in Scotland. Just outside is the Glenmorangie and Balblair Distilleries.......
You’ll be stuck for choice.

Thanks for that very helpful.
Although I do need a few translations
1. What’s are Gows
2. What is a Dream Ring
I may be spending the entire week in MacLeod’s though D4 MY15 SE TECH
