The first photo is Laggan Dam, 80 miles from Mallaig and no where near the NC500. Mind you unless it’s changed route, neither is Mallaig, hope you’ve got a SatNav Laughing

They like Tourist blood. Whistle

Live up here for a while and you get used to them, so only a minor inconvenience. Thumbs Up

Hardly any midgies further north in Applecross or Lochinver. Pleasantly surprised. A cocktail of Smidge, Citronella and DEET usually has some effect but it does seem to vary year to year.

They love the hot weather and are usually out in strength. And not forgetting the horse flies. Thumbs Up

The very prolonged dry spell we had does seem to mean we have more of them when it is damp (rather than full on wet) but if there is a moderate breeze they are fine, and only particularly bad beginning and end of the day.

Smidge works exceptionally well for me. I've seen some people use it as a spray and complain it doesn't work. It doesn't seem to stop them being around you or landing on you but, as a thin film rubbed on the skin does stop them biting and kills them. If I'm gardening in late summer I can wipe thousands of them from my face, without a single one having bitten.

You can tell who has washed their cars here as the ones with tree sap on them are like insect magnets.
