Never understood the following (JLR showroom) |
|
The following is exactly as it happened.
I decided to buy a D4 from my local dealer in Coventry. Me ‘I will give you the screen price but can you provide a 3rd key and some mats to sweeten the deal’ Salesman ‘no’
Sale lost – I purchased from Sturgess in Leicester.
I’ve always thought this was bonkers and have never understood it. Any thoughts?

Presumably you are talking about Sytners in Allesley IIRC.
Not this branch but I have had good service from their branches in Portsmouth & Northampton.
It seems a funny attitude, bearing in mind their mark-up.
Glad to hear you got a decent deal elsewhere.

I have had the same… twice…
Had an offer for a brand new defender from LR dealer… took the offer to my local dealer and said that I would order from them if they could match the price…. They said they couldn’t… so I went to the place I had the offer from…
Same for an evoque…
Do the dealers not want to sell new cars?

Nothing new, I’m looking at the new Defender, Elgin dealer “no chance of any discount”, Aberdeen dealer “£3k off”.. guess who’s getting the order? I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Had this a few times and now I have next to no patience. Most are indifferent but it does make me smile when a dealer takes offence

In 2016, a friend of mine wanted to buy a new FFRR Vogue SE with extras. He did some internet searching and got a response from Sturgess at Leicester offering a percentage off list price. As his family home is near Guildford, he called in at his local dealership to see what they would do. “The price is on the screen sir” was the reply. “I know, but a competitor is offering this deal.” “The price is on the screen sir”, the robot answered.
Commuting to his weekday residence in Chesterfield, he called in at Sturgess. The salesman said yes to what they’d offered and to any other additions, but then asked if he’d thought about the Autobiography which would have most of the extras he wanted plus others, and would be cheaper. The extras not included were things like an electric tow bar. He handed the cheque over there and then.
Obviously there are some dealers that have things FAR too easy!

a few years ago after buying an approved used Evoque, that hadnt been serviced or valeted and had been badly repaired after a prior accident their salesman then tried to sell me a much lower spec base Freelander 2 to replace it on the basis that it had tinted windows and sidesteps. He got quite offended when i asked him to get a salesman who a) knew LR products and b) respected customers and didnt talk down to them
LR dealers are pretty much useless these days IMO, its bad enough having to deal with independent car salesmen never mind a muppet in a posh showroom 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

Whenever I have bought a Land Rover from a dealer, I have always been better informed than the salesman, which I guess would be the case for most of us on here.
When I bought my first Disco, I asked for the chassis number so that I could check the build sheet on Topix to see what extras were included. The salesman was not aware of this system and called his mates over to show them.

A dealer recently told me that the cars were much better built now since LR had just started giving 5 year warranty on all their vehicles.
He could understand why I started laughing!!!
He then told me all sorts of rubbish about LR being exempt from having to have Winter Tires (it was in Germany) during winter spells.
I ordered the car, but later the salesman was such an idiot that I asked to talk to manager.
Turns out the manager was also an idiot. I told him what the salesman had said and how he had spoken to me, and the manager simply told me to “grow up and sort it out yourself!!”
Then when I wished him a good evening but didn’t thank him for his call, he banished me from the garage and cancelled the order.

Lol reminds a bit of the JCW I bought. I offered 1700 less than screen price because I thought it expensive for the specification. The sales manager rang me back and was in a bit of a quandary. He confessed that the first to buy normally was the best offer but its was a little low and maybe that they had miss priced the car. Did he take it or did he wait longer? I left it with him but a JCW came up over the weekend which I subsequently bought. I kept a watch on the other Mini and it disappeared once its hit 16.5k from the approved used, £300 less than I had offered a few months earlier. I did let him know that I bought the one that came up for £21k and he agreed it was a much better buy.
