New battery and BMS reset & what's this about parking brakes |
|
Hi.
New battery time for 2015 D4 and I have heard that the BMS will have to be reset although my BIL says that he changed his without any resetting.
What happens if I don't reset it?
Also dropped by at Halfords to get a ballpark price but guy asked if it had an electric parking brake, when I said yes he said if that's the case they could not fit one to my car.
What's that all about? 2015 D4 HSE in Corris Grey
All below gone but still with happy memories
2010 D4 XS in Stornaway Grey
2006 D3 S in Zermatt Silver
2001 Td5 Oslo Blue
1993 300Tdi Arken Grey

If you don’t reset it, the smart charging may not work correctly. This when the car can increase the charge rate, and load on the alternator, when it’s decelerating, in doing so it’s harvesting energy to charge the battery at a higher rate.
When you accelerate, the load on the alternator is decreased and the charging level is reduced.
You can witness this happening by plugging a volt meter into the accessory socket.
The strategy only works when the battery is sufficiently charged, so if it’s in a discharged state it will get maximum alternator power until it is charged.
The BMS manages all this, so you need to reset it when a new battery is fitted. Failure to do so will not stop the battery charging, but the car may not be able to determine its state, and may not charge the battery in the most efficient manner.
I suppose it’s possible that the car might ‘think’ it’s got a fully charged battery, when in fact it’s not, and therefore does not give as much charge as it would if the car knew the true state?
