New battery time ?

half expected it to fail at some point soon but was hoping to get close r to winter before getting one, however …

2 mins into journey this morning, got loads of warnings about almost everything on the car and as I pulled up to traffic lights thought about turning off/on again to see if they cleared but as I went to neutral, I could hear frantic clicking somewhere in the centre console so stuck it back in drive, held it on the brakes, and continued onwards when lights changed. (didn't fancy being a roadblock on the East Lancs during rush hour Laughing ). Secret Squirrel menu said 11.6 volts.

reached destination (only 5 mins from home), turned off … waited 10 seconds, restarted … no issues. did my shopping, came back to car … no signs of anything ever being wrong. Got home and volts showing 13.something with engine idling.

From reading many posts on here, methinks battery change is now getting to point of urgent. Am I right ?

Possibly, and more so if its the original battery. Check the battery voltage in the morning before you start up. If its below 12v its goosed for sure. Ideally you want to see 12.3 or above. If you're going for a new one I'd recommend Yuasa with 5 yrs warranty.

Was that 11.6v with engine running or off? If so goosed alternator was my first non-techie thought, pos taking the battery with it. Sad

Hi Phil, seen them but not only do I have Halfrauds trade card, I also have a pile of vouchers they accept ! And I could pick one up today (if I get the plumbing in the bathroom finished to SWMBO's satisfaction).

I'm going to check battery volts shortly before starting the car … which is a bit awkward as I parked with front of bonnet below the bay window Sad so will have to see if I can roll it back a bit first.

ok … got to check the secret squirrel menu again @ about 6pm this evening (and, no, the plumbing isn't resolved. why the heck I chose slow curing sealant is currently beyond me Sad )

opened car and checked volts … 11.8v

started … dropped to 10.6v

within seconds, climbed up to 13+ and was showing 14.0 after about 2 mins.

So … I'm taking this as confirmation alternator is still good but battery is ready for replacement. Anyone disagree ?

As has been mentioned so often on here, you're a fool to use the diagnostic screen, it tells far too many lies. It's not even a rough guide it's so far off the mark. Rolling Eyes

Get a proper multimeter across the battery to find out what's really happening. Wink

I'll be able to do that tomorrow … now I'm not parked where I can't open the bonnet Very Happy

I did go thorough this earlier in the year but the warmer weather had meant the battery has survived longer … when I used the meter on the battery, it showed within .5 of a volt of the menu voltage, so I think it's a reasonable guide to what's going on.

Sounds like a new battery required to me. That is, unless you are just doing short journeys and the battery doesn't have enough time to recover after starting the car. If that's the case, a good run or a spell on a battery charger might be the order of the day.

Spoke to one of Halfords fitters yesterday... They're ceasing stocking the lifetime guarantee versions because no-one is buying them because "no-one keeps cars as long these days "

Don't forget to check all your connections (Including Earth Strap) as a loose connection can give erratic voltages and cause your relays to click..

The Halfords 019 AGM battery is Yuasa if you read the safety data sheet.
