New battery time

Had my D4 (bought from here) for about a year and with the lockdown and not using the car, naturally the battery is failing to start the car, without a bump start from my wife’s mini.

My D4 is a 14 plate and has stop start, which I quite like.

Before I go trawling the internet etc for a battery, any recommendations here as to battery, had Varta and Bosch on my D2, but want to check I’m getting the right battery for the D4 truck.

Also considering that this car feels like a 4 wheeled computer, is it ok to just disconnect the old battery, remove the old one and stick a new one in and jobs a good un ?

Make sure you get an AGM battery, the EK950 Exide Start-Stop AGM Car Battery 95Ah 017 seems to be well recommended.

Before fitting, fully charge the new battery off the car.

After fitting you'll need to reset the BMS using an IID tool or similar so that the car knows it has a new battery and learns the characteristics of the new battery.

MY2019 D5 HSE 3.0 SDV6 - sold to a dealer for a crazy price! - So good I bought another!

Thanks

I don’t have an iid tool, or anything remotely similar Big Cry

I’ll need to use the disco before lockdown ends, will it still be ok to replace the battery ?

Bearing in mind I’m not a techie and no longer run LRs I’d say don’t worry about it. I changed the battery on my D4, bunged it on a charger and then couldn’t find how to reset the BMS. I just got on with life and never had any issues.

The battery I took out is presently sitting in my front hall fully charged ready to power my Engel, ready for the freezer lack of power acopilypse. Whistle Whistle

I think the car will still be usable but it won't make efficient use of the battery capacity so might have a few minor electrical gremlins until you can get the BMS reset or it slowly learns the new battery's charge / discharge characteristics.

I'm sure someone will be along soon who knows what happens if you don't reset the BMS....... Wink

Thanks. That’s largely what I’d figured that I’ll have to do, just get on with it and hope for the best.

What on earth is an “Engel” - that needs a disco battery to run ?

This is what Tanya batteries recommended:

https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/enduroline/019-agm/

019 ENDUROLINE AGM START STOP CAR BATTERY 95AH

At £120, it’s a lot less than I was expecting.

Engel is a 45ltr camping fridge that is usually employed keeping beer and food (beer stocks allowing) at just above freezing when on camping trips. Nothing better than freezing cold beer when camping in just above zero temps but with big roaring fire in some place in Scandinavia that even the locals haven’t heard about. Whistle Whistle

And don’t forget even with a new battery it will need a maintenance charge if it’s left standing during the lockdown. I find mine needs charging up every three to four weeks. Get yourself a ctek charger and read up on here how to connect it correctly otherwise this will also upset the BMS

That’s a nice looking bit of camping kit.

My camping days are over, I now appreciate hotels more than wild camping, but glad I hadn’t gotten round to selling it. It now holds about 2 weeks worth of food for 2 of us. And no, buying the stuff to make the precooked food in there wasn’t panic buying, I was quite calm. Laughing Laughing

What I’m missing. Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

Suggest you search the forum for Ctek charger recommendations & also battery recommendations.

I did well with a battery from Halfrauds, who will fit & reset your BMS.

Thanks, will search for ctek.

Not sure I’d let halfrauds fit a new battery for me. But that would just be my perception of their overall mechanical competence.
