New Discovery 4

Hi everyone, new here and was just about to purchase my first Land Rover.
Garage I was buying from seemed great, they had offered to do cambelt as car was near 100k in the clock. Also offered a 1 year warranty.
Due to collect next week but they phoned today, whilst driving it to get work done the cambelt snapped and ruined the crank.
They have said they completely understand if we want to walk away and give us money back. But have said they have found a garage to do the work (not a full new engine) but will be all brand new parts etc and about 6k work. Should I definitely walk away from this or if done right could it be ok?
Lovely car but don’t want to buy something which is set for future trouble.
Thanks, Mark

If they put an genuine LR replacement engine in there you'd have a couple of years warranty - that would be an option i'd consider - otherwise...walk Thumbs Up

Welcome MarkLawford

I would only stick with the car if the repairs were done by www.OvalAutos.com site sponsors.

I would be uninclined to trust anyone else.

Walk away ! If the cambelt had snapped the broken crank would have only been part of the damage Rolling with laughter So they are not telling you the truth . It will cost a lot more than £6k to take out and rebuild the engine . LR only supply rebuilt engines for this issue and they alone are £5k plus. You may get a decent independant to do it for £10k LR main dealer cost is £13k plus VAT plus its likeley it will need new turbos as well. Sounds to me that the dealers bought one on spec they hadnt driven .

Thanks for the advice.
So the company who will be repairing it will be QP online LTD. A lot of great feedback from people about them and hugely impressive feedback. They are yet to see the vehicle but I will be speaking with them personally before I even consider taking this vehicle. But after speaking to numerous people privately (who on fb recommended them) who have had work done by these and 2 years on say the engine feels better than the day they got it is encouraging.
Not sure extent of work but apparently they can’t do anything until March time but once they have it they will be in contact of what is being done

save yourself trouble later there are lots of d3/d4 for sale out there why would you buy something that most likely going to be trouble later, dont assume a repaired engine is going to be better than a well looked after example
out of interest what's your budget for buying a disco?and are you hands on when it comes to looking after it or will you get someone to look after it for you

personally i would be buying a lotto ticket tonight and be thinking thats lucky when it failed and not on the way home after buying it
 please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick,thankyou

Yes we are highly unlikely to purchase now. My concern is us going to get another one and then what just happened to the salesman happening to us!
This one had perfect main dealer servicing and was immaculate but as you know cranks on these can go at random times.
My only thinking to pursue this one was that it had already happened and with no parts fitted by a company who loads have pointed me out to could almost give me more piece of mind than one which is still ticking lol.
Minefield… just hard to know what’s going to happen and a newly built engine and warranty for a year is prob more piece of mind than another! But 100% don’t want something which has more busted bits from this recent issue

Absolutely get your deposit back, and walk away very rapidly. These engines are not successfully repairable (if at all) from this type of catastrophic damage, even in the hands of experts. The only option in my book, would be a genuine LR replacement engine, and they are not going to run to that.Thumbs Up
D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

Thankyou everyone.
Garage offered deposit back and have been really good.
Our search for an alternative starts now lol.
Just very wary now that we may purchase one that is waiting for a crank to go!
No other cars really tick all the boxes so want to stick with a disco, just anxious now!

If you are going to worry about the crank dont buy a D4or D5 they are money pits and not worth the stress . You were very lucky to dodge the other one but the garage were BSting you about the circumstances . As for the rubbish about the repairers there is no way they could have renewed that lump for that money without cutting many corners .
Mine has just had a remanufactured JLR lump fitted ,wont be keeping it beyond its 2 year warranty though once bitten twice shy

Good decision Mark Thumbs Up

There are good second hand D4s for sale; I was lucky enough to have bought one in May 2017 which, fingers crossed, has been reliable so far. 15k miles when I bought it and, due to CV19, only 49k miles now.

I don't want to sell, although I have two prospective purchasers in the wings. Why? Because I can't find anything better for my purposes.

I should mention that I have owned FFRRs or Discos continuously since 2000, and a number on & off prior to 2000.
