A new key

Hi chaps.

I bought a genuine key from a reputable seller off of eBay. Thought it would be easy to just get it coded but I’ve been told by a locksmith and landrover that I will need to buy a new module. Is this correct? Can it not be got around? It’s for my 2012 d4.

Cheers
Neil

Powerfull uk have a great video on coding eBay keys and they do say that main dealers are unable to code these keys. You will however need an IID tool

Oh ok. I haven’t seen that one. Wierd how a copy key can be coded but not a genuine? Unless it can?

earlier vehicles like yours can be coded with iid without a new Rfa module.
The Landrover equipment (SDD) could code them, but they force the new rfa module to be fitted to make the vehicle more secure.
But it seems the later modules can be defeated anyway. Neutral

Later Fob as such with the 8 speed models as the OP you will struggle via the IID.

Unfortunatley that is incorrect, I know as I had a new key coded by LR for a 2015 D4.
The car went in and the dealer statedup front that sometimes the RFA module will not accept a new key and soemtimes they will and be prepared to pay for a new module as well (expensive), they phoned an hour later and confirmed the new key had be programmed to the old RFA unit with no issues.
S it can be done but somtimes does throw up issues, thankfully not in my case

It’s down to the part number of the rfa module. Early modules will need to be updated. Later modules, (like yours) has a later version module already fitted, thus you can code the key. Iid isn’t bothered, ( just like SDD wasn’t until Landrover decided to make sure all the old modules were of the newer type.

The latest vehicles have a write once module and need to be renewed for every key code. While under three year warranty Landrover will fund the module price, you pay for just the key. After three years you have to buy both. Most D5, new RRS, new FFRR are like this

Hope that makes sense?

Regards
Steve
