New Key question
So, need some advice about keys
My new-to-me MY2011 TDV6 has been in the dealer getting some warranty work done; £1200 and counting, so thank God for the dealer warranty!
One of the things to be done was a new key, as the two that came with it are both worn and one is missing a key blade
But they couldn’t do it, citing the required ‘machine’ wasn’t working so it’s booked for next week; it’s also getting a service that they forgot to do.
Looking at the work invoice I picked up, it’s down not just for a key (LR032873), but also a ‘module - passive starts (LR071651)
Question I have, from reading this and this, is in regard to future key programming.
Does this passive start module have the same ‘write once’ security update of the KVM?
I have an IID, and long term plan would be to interweb-bay-zon another key so I have two cosmetically pleasing keys, but if I’m going to need to replace this passive start module I order to add more keys, I’d better get a new key now.
Or will IID let me add keys regardless, going forward.
Would appreciate the advice
Kind regards

If you want to cosmetically replace your keys you can get a new shell and swop the board over easy enough and it has no effect on the key security.012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)

Yup; I've just swapped my key case for a genuine LR one. Less than £10 delivered from the bay of plenty and 5 mins to swap the innards over.MY2012 D4 HSE in Siberian Silver, 1967 MGB

Thanks guys, I know new cases can be gotten to swap old keys into them, but I’m looking to find out about coding new keys to the car.
If this will require a new Passive Start Module, then there is a clear opportunity to get keys now.
If it isn’t a problem, then I can do it later.2011 D4 XS : LHD

I’m a little lost, you have 2 good keys (but with a blade missing) that just need a fresh case but you may want a 3rd? 3 is the max so I would go with a new 3rd and refurb the other 2. I’m not sure if with the new anti tamper security you can add a 3rd later. You may not be able to have 3 at all with it so it’s probably best to talk to LR.012MY RRS 5.0 Supercharged Autobiography (Current)

Not quite.
There are two keys, both very weathered, and dealer has agreed to provide a new key in addition to the two weathered ones.
Hadn’t appreciated at the time, but getting a new key means they are changing the Passive Start Module as well.
The issue ahead of me is that one of the keys is so knackered, I don’t hold much hope for it’s long term survival, so it’s already in the back of my mind that I might need another key on top of that.
What I don’t know is if the passive start module suffers the same security update as the KVM, so adding a key in the future may prove difficult.
I have emailed Pat to ask and, understandably, his response is that until the module is fitted, and I can send him the ECU info, he can’t tell if it’s locked or not.
Was looking to find if any had recent experiences with this and were able to pass on their knowledge.
Hadn’t realised though that emplacement cases were easy for the D4, so eBay may be a good idea, but pain in the ass to get stuff shipped here, apparently.2011 D4 XS : LHD
