New to me LR Discovery 4

Well, i never thought i would own one of these for various reasons. But this one came up for sale on a forum i am on and at a very reasonable price - as in i could probably easily double my money if i sold it on. But alas the other really likes it.

Its a 2011 Land Rover Discovery 4 Landmark Edition for its age its a really clean motor and importantly everything on it works just now. Missing a few trims that i need to sort etc, but other than that a good base to start with.

What i did discover after it sitting overnight it was dropped on the front passenger side, whipped the wheel off and extended the air suspension and as suspected a small whole in the airbag (which look original) with the car running it keeps it inflated etc and even at standard height it will hold air over night and not. So onto ebay and bought a pair of Brand new shocks/bags for less than £200 - not a hard job to swap out so they were ordered up and i tackled the def broke one first.

I am under no illusion with the air suspension it may need more work, but the parts are now cheap enough to easily sort - so not put off. Also just to add it has a permanent tow bar but was missing the cowling for the hook up, again this bought and fitted, no before pics but one after, much better i think.

Also to add the amount of muck that came out when i took the inner arch liner off, unreal. Anyway to change the front strut - need to take all the sues and relay out to stop it levelling while working on it, and i may have broke the relay, still works so tapped it up just now till i get a new one. 3 x 15mm nuts at the top - 1 x 21mm head bolt and 24mm nut. Once dropped enough the 12mm to take the airline out. then just pull the strut out, fitting is reverse.

Anyway - Some Pictures.

And then a final one, anyone in the know what this black cover is on the pipe, i thought it was the AC fill point, but take it off and its open ended.

Plus 1 in doing a grand job

I believe that pipe is to connect a vacuum pump to remove ur engine oil instead of draining it via the engine sump plug

Ref suspension I’m pretty sure if u remove F26 from the engine bay fuse box that disables the suspension, plse be careful when u reinstall it as the body will drop suddenly

Good news the strut bolts came out ok, always handy putting some copperslip on those lower bolts for the future

Not wishing to try and teach u how to suck eggs but plse never work under the landy without using axle stands

Ur indeed find the forum full of extremly kind and helpful members along with a vast range of accessible information via the search feature

Hope that helps

Hope u didn’t mind me mentioning it but noticed that the near side brake disc shield has a small rust hole top area

With the liner out ideal time to check the intercooler hose , shared a pic of mine so u know what area I was talking about

Hope it’s useful to u and happy motoring as they are such a joy to drive

Can I add a word about jacking up on those slabs - you risk that they crack and move as its a crazy heavy car. Ask me how I know.

The pipe in the photo is to suck out your engine oil once you have undone the filler cap.

Welcome to the forum Thumbs Up

Many Thanks for the responses folks. Yeah well versed in Axle stands, not in picture but did have them under the car.

The hole in the dust shield i think is meant to be there, does not look rusted etc, i'll check on the drivers side when i swap that shock/bag - bought a pair as no point in doing just one.

Ah thats ideal, i bought an oil vacuum pump, saves getting under the car, also i feel it gets much more oil out than just dropping it.

The oil suction pipe should be on the absolute bottom of the sump, the boss of the drain bolt means it is slightly above the bottom of the sump. Net result the suction pipe gets a little more oil.

The advantage of taking out the plug is if magnetic it can collect debris to be inspected. But when changing the filter it should be inspected carefully anyway as some of the potential material is non magnetic.
A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

So not alot been happening with the car, but swapped the other side airbag, no point in taking pics as already done the one side.

But after having a look around the top of the engine i noticed oil, so thought i would get the 3 seals for the inlet throttle body. So decided to tackle that today - whipped the throttle body off, and well, good news bad news. Found out where all the oil has come from - someone ham fisted has managed to either over tighten or just drop and brake the housing where the egr goes in.

so after clearing both egr's that go into the throttle body and cleaning the same on the throttle body i put back together, however as a temp measure decided to plastic weld the part the was broken (Temp fix until i get a replacement) Also cleaned the sensor that was absolutely caked in carbon.

So if anyone has a used good one, by all means PM me before i go start looking for a new knock off one. Also anyone got a link for decent kits for EGR Blanking. Worst things ever EGR's etc.

Also it came with the roof bars, now i don't have a key for them, but there is a website that can hopefully cut me one with the code on the barrel. So will see how i get on with that. Anyway, some pics.
