That does not sound like normal TC judder.
 2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Shuddering when braking is generally a warped disc. Well all the times ive had it my cars at least. Usually starts at high speeds like 100km then gets worse and occurs at low speeds as well 80 km and 60km. Sometimes faulty ABS/wheel speed sensors can also cause vibrations and noise at slow speeds but mainly when turning and braking. You should feel it thru the pedal though.

I'm in a similar boat - posted elsewhere but limited responses so I'll try here:

I have had transmission judder for the last week or so, mostly under load or when slowing. It ranges from barely there to feeling like a stall is imminent. Gears do still seem to be changing fine.

I'm on 155k, had filter & pan change done 35k ago. My indy recommends a ZF remanufactured transmission - he's not at all keen on rebuilds, and given they are only $1000 cheaper and come without fluid etc I can see his point. He's also against plopping some Dr Tranny in and seeing how it goes.

I mentioned to him just doing the TC and he's against that - he says its a waste or money.

What do you guys reckon. Is he right or what would others suggest? Cheers!

Well im of the opinion that by the time its shuddering its kinda too late. If the oil is bad enough to damage the TC its bad enough to damage the transmission as well.

From calling around for quotes all places advised against just replacing the TC. One very good reason is the labour costs. If you pay to drop the trans and only fix TC then you find out later your transmission is also stuffed which is quite likely to be the case you will be $1500-2000AUD in labour costs worse off then if you had them done at same time. Thats a big risk to take IMO and the onus is on you not repairer.

I think another reason they are reluctant to just to TC is because they have no way of really knowing how bad the damage is unless they open it up. If they are going to open it they may as well replace the worn parts whilst there. I guess if you have very mild slipping like i did your trans will eventually fail so get it done now before you need a tow like i did.

When it comes to transmissions and engines you dont want to take chances because repairs can quickly spiral out of control due to labour costs. Drop it once, make sure they do your rear main as well (mine needed doing but even still id get it done) and do it right. Sometimes you gotta spend money to save money Thumbs Up

If you don't have a gearbox issue there is absolutely no direct requirement for a gearbox recon. If it's just the TC, that's all you need, as I, and many others, have had done.

What was the fluid like when the pan was changed before? If it was all OK then, and the box seems OK now, then I'd say there's a high chance the box is fine.

How are the people who used BA transmissions getting on now as I am in the needing a new TC boat very soon as my shudders are starting to come back after my flush 3 years ago. So this time I want a new or refurbished TC. I'm having oil pump and belts done soon, so if BA do a good job I'll be paying them a visit.

Hello? So is it worth getting a new TC for slight judder or do you really need a whole refurb like the gearbox specialists keep telling me???

Depends on how long it's been shuddering for really?

Only recently, i would get a TC stuck in, change the box filter etc and see.
If it's been shuddering before, flushed and started again. You may need a box refresh.

It's now on 149,000. It shuddered 3 years ago, soon after purchase, now 20k later it is starting to come back. I guess the box needs an overhaul really, but at £2k+, not likely!

It will need a new TC.

You could chance it being fine, gearbox wise and just stick a new TC in.
But it's a gamble. You could get lucky, you could get stung in a few months if the box is pretty worn.
