Newbie advice needed on options |
|
I'm new to the LR world but am about to start the purchase process on a D4 3.0TD HSE and would like some advice on a few things if you folks would be so kind.
I come from the Jackaroo/Patrol/Cruiser world where everything is either there or you choose another spec kind of deal but I see LR play the option game like BMW. I don't want to slip up by ordering something expensive and useless or without something regarded as must have.
So here goes. What are the thoughts on what I should add to the HSE standard spec?
Electronic diff lock looks like a no brainer but I'm unsure if the roof is worth it etc etc.
Also, do they have vehicles on advance order with certain common options or does everything have to be waited for (I assume 4-5mths)?
Are Sydney dealers showing any "flexibility" at the moment or is it RRP all the way?
Also, will the aftermarket 17's that are around for the D3 TDV6 fit on the D4 3.0 TD's?
Sorry to hit you all with a list but I contribute and view a few forums and know the value that guys on a forum like this can be so I thank you in advance.

Hi outbacktourer,
With regards to the 17" rims, no they won't fit - 19" are currently the smallest that will clear the calipers. Have a look at
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic42512.html
for details on a possible 18" rime that will fit. ex - 2006 D3 TDV6 SE, silver, with lots of stuff - R.I.P.
ex - 2009 D3 TDV6 SE, silver, had lots of stuff too!
Now - 2010 RRS 3.0 TDV6, rimini red, 18" rims + Cooper LTZ, rear eLocker, Spider tuning box, GOE protection plates and rock sliders, GOE 3way shortened rods.

I found the guys at Purnell in Blakehurst to be good. I went for the 2.7L with E-diff + a load of options you get as standard on the HSE. I previously had the E-diff and it works well so I ordered again, but in reality the car is also great without it.

I think the roof is an OK option if you use it/like it but I have read somewhere it can be a problem if you ever want to put the expedition rack on (or perhaps this was a problem with some after market racks available in the UK that have a much lower profile).
I don't have the E-diff on my D3 and have never wished i got it but my off road is all sand so I didn't bother even considering it. In fact i have the SE with no options at all and the only thing i miss is a 6 stack CD player that will read MP3's from a disc.
My racks, tinting (and now towbar) are aftermarket, and in my opinion all better, and cheaper than those LR had on offer.
If you think there is a chance you would use the e-diff I would probably get it, and wait if you had to. With no chance of fitting one later either through LR or after market you could never change your mind.
It's a pretty popular option so I would think there would be some in the current stock. 2012 MY13 SDV6 SE D4 Ipanema Sand with Almond leather

Trivett Parramatta was good for me |
|
Hi,
I have just put the deposit down on a D4 3.0SE this morning.
I got a great price, and just as importantly great service from Trivett Land Rover in Parramatta. Conversely my local dealership (I am on the lower North Shore) wouldn't call me back within 24 hours (multiple times!), didn't serve me in the dealership when I got in, and don't seem to be interested.
Another option to try is http://www.privatefleet.com.au/ which is a car-broker I used for my previous car, and the options they had on this car were pretty darn close to my best quote. If you use them, I'd appreciate it if you could PM me so that I may get a referral credit, but even if you don't, they are good to get a indicative price from. Suzuki Vitara 3dr

Thanks for your responses gents, looks like a welcoming crowd here.
I've settled on a White/Almond HSE with just the eDiff and door protectors and F & R mud flaps.
Like I said I'm not really into the options game and I notice you could option up an SE without a few of the frills to get what you want a bit cheaper, but we all know what you get for options later down the track!
As a matter of interest, a mate of mine recently bought one of those twin turbo X5's, just go and have a look at the options on that, makes you wonder what comes standard! Makes the Disco 4 look like a bargain once you spec it up to the same level.
Looking at all your rig specs under your signatures I seem to have worked up quite a good wish list which may even rival what I have put on my Patrol over 8 years!

Sounds good OBT. When are you expecting the new baby to arrive?
I think you're right on the options. If you look at the price difference between the SE and HSE, once you add on a few decent options to an SE (and pay the extra stamp/LCT on those options) you are getting pretty close to HSE territory, so you may as well get the HSE with it all factory fitted and hopefully claw back some of the expense at resale time.
And i know what you mean with the BMW. I looked at getting a 5 series and thought the price was pretty reasonable until I saw the options list and realised what you don't get in the base package. Audi are just as bad and the A6 is ugly anyway, but the E-series Mercedes wasn't too bad. I gave up in the end when i woke up to the fact I was about to pay a lot for a car that in the end drove only marginally better than a falcon - albeit without the diff whine!!!! 2012 MY13 SDV6 SE D4 Ipanema Sand with Almond leather

Just getting some quoting started, don't need it until May/June, which seems to be when orders are being taken for..let you know once I've done the deed!

Agree Alto sales are lousy. They were good when I bought mine though. Woulkd reccomend Purnells for purchase.
You may be better with Alto for service. Better and closer. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

If you're going to stick with 19" wheels, spec a full size spare. It's ridiculously cheap compared with having to source one after sales.

I ordered a white 3 litre D4 a couple of weeks ago - won't be delivered until end April early May with a build in Feb 2010. Only options ordered were E-Diff (cheap compared with after market diff locker), roof rails and bars (plus the usual jazz like tint, mats etc). Anything else will be aftermarket as it's better value and can be added as the budget allows. I got the white coz it hides the scratches and dirt better. I find with my 1998 300 Tdi Discovery (also white) that most shallow scratches polish out, and it's harder to see the deeper ones than on metallic - also white is about 1800 bucks cheaper. Hope this helps

Unless I'm mistaken there is no after market diff locker to fit a D3 or D4. There was a post on here recently that apparently ARB were looking into it but it isn't available yet. 2012 MY13 SDV6 SE D4 Ipanema Sand with Almond leather

I too thought there was one coming from ARB, and based on prices for ones currently available for other cars (e.g. Land Cruiser etc) the E - Diff option from LR seems "cheap" at about 1200 dollars. But who knows, maybe ARB won't come up with lockers after all if LR keep selling the E - Diff option at this price. Land Rover Series IIA 1967
