RRS fairly soon after FFRR apparently (dealers are willing to take deposits now), nothing confirmed for D3 yet but I suspect it'll follow not long afterwards. LR could loose out on a lot of potential sales if they didn't put it in the D3 The End

If/when the D3 gets the V8 Diesel, I wonder what will happen to the residual value of existing TDV6 D3's ?

It depends how many of us decide to sell the V6 and order a V8. If we all do it at once, the value will fall.

I suspect they will keep the V6 for the lower models and offer the SE with both engine options and the HSE with the V8 only. Used value wise depends on which model and how old. I would be careful about putting ££ into a V6 HSE going into 2007.
I presume that UK wise the petrol V8 will be killed off by this?

I would imgine the TDV8 is going to kill of all the V8 petrols in whichever vehicle in Europe and possibly the USA apart from the 'monty' SC (even though it's only 2 secs quicker 0-60), so the marketing peeps are going to be pretty careful? and theeeeennn......???

I believe the TDV6 was not released in the US becuase the sulphur content was to high so I doubt they will get the V8 deisel. it would be a shame not to be able to choose between the six and eight deisel though

With quoted performance figures not far off that of the V8 Petrol, I guess it does make the V8 a questionable purchase? Be interesting to see how they market it. Personally, I can't see them deleting the Petrol variant altogether. Easier job for the FFRR - and RRS as they have the Supercharged variant to wave the Petrol flag. I think eventually the SC will be the only V8 option on the FFRR and RRS with the rest of the range Diesel. However, with no Super Charged D3?
Bit of a puzzle me thinks D3 HSE V8...

This was said about the V8 petrol defender in the 1990s. However as the tdi (and then td5) engines were introduced, the power difference narrowed to the point where there seemed no point for UK to continue with the petrol model. It still exists for some overseas markets though. [and yes I know that some special editions were made with the petrol v8 recently].
I would have thought that the petrol option will be phased out for all except the SC versions of LR products. I wouldn't bet on an SC version of the D3 though- I think LR will still try and keep a bit of brand differentiation between models, and having the SC exclusively for RR would be the way they'd do it.
I also think that this will be the strategy for tdv8 D3. I'm sure there will be overwhelming demand for a tdv8 version, but LR will want to ensure that the RR / RRS have the 'premium brand' and get the engine significantly before the D3.
I would also think that the D3 will eventually (+12months?) get the tdv8, but that they will keep the tdv6 for base models until such time as emissions regulations make it unviable. They were planning (apparently) to use the D3 as the basis for the Defender replacement, with stripped down interior, coils, etc. It would make sense then for them to offer this D3-lite as a tdv6.
-although it is entirely possible that I'm talking absolute b@!!@cks. Discovery 3 tdv6 7 seat Buckingham Blue
Had it since new - sold Jun 17 after 12 years and 214,000 miles

I agree entirely - closing the gap makes the V8 likely for deletion. Still, the petrol option as the top-of-the-range D3 HSE flagship still seems logical (NB maybe to me only!!!!).
The US and many other overseas markets need a good diesel and the TDV8 provides this, however, as you say, it's more likely to be phased out through evolution and education; many markets still love petrol over diesel.
Oh well, we can but speculate. I'm sue time will out.
Now then, what else can we sort out.......
D3 HSE V8...
