Newspaper deliveries

Whilst I was working full time, to age 60'ish I only had the Saturday & Sunday papers delivered as generally I left home for work at c.06:00.

For the last 17+ years I have been consulting & working from home, and have the papers delivered each day.

Until recently the papers have generally arrived by about 07:00, but in the last year delivery times have slipped dramatically. On Sunday, despite two telephone calls to the newsagents, they didn't arrive until 11:40, yesterday it was nearly 10:00 & today I am still waiting @ 08:55.

In my view papers should arrive "before breakfast", say by 07:30'ish.

What's your view & experience?

I should add that I can't change my newsagents, as I am in a rural situation & there is no alternative, and yes I can & do read one paper on-line.

From ages 9-12 I did a paper round 7 days a week. I got paid more for working on Sunday than I did for the other 6 days.

I was always finished and back home by 8am at the latest.

Newagents these days cant seem to get reliable paperboys/girls. My mom (in her 80's) used to have her paper delivred, but no longer as the papershop has no delivery kids.

A sign of the times - none of them want to get up early and earn some money

We have a Sunday paper delivered - SWMBO's little treat to herself - and it's delivered by an adult in a car. Used to be a old woman with a push bike but she's retired. It's always on the mat by 7am. We're in a village although not one that's in the middle of nowhere.

Paper round deliveries? Brings back memories!

When I first started had to borrow the shops 'grocery' bike Big old heavy thing with a big basket on the front.

Sometimes I did a double round if another lad had not turned in and still made it into school for 9am!

Employment laws for children have changed in last 50+ years. I understand it is now illegal to shove a small boy up a chimney to sweep it! Rolling with laughter Parents are also so scared/mollycoddle their kids and will drive them the 5-10 minutes walk to school as it is too dangerous for them to walk!

Milk deliveries? We still get ours delivered in 1 pint (or should I say 568.2612mL) glass bottles delivered at about midnight. Local milk from local farms supporting to local businesses, yes it is more expensive then milk in 1 litre plastic containers which goes in recycling bin rather then being reused glass bottles.

Newsagents have changed in the last 10 years or so as they generally cannot survive on selling newspapers and magazines alone. They had to diversify so now sell sandwiches and household goods to some extent. So maybe their first priority is not newspapers particularly in more built up areas as there is so much competition.

Agreed about newsagents diversifying. I think our paper is delivered by the local company that delivers to the local shops etc. so I guess they're cutting out the middle man in such cases.

We have milk delivered. It's just Milk and More rather than a local supplier doing local deliveries. It comes in glass bottles, which means the bottles are reused rather than "recycled" via Malaysia...

In the end my paper was delivered at 10:10 Mad

The newsagents is a large shop, including a sub-post office, sells food & booze.

They don't do it, but we do have local deliveries of milk, in glass bottles, and the milkman also delivers other diary products like cream, butter etc.. I'm going to ask whether he could also do papers.

I should add that I am about 1.8 miles from the newsagent, and 4 of my 6 immediate neighbours all have daily papers from them.

Newspaper sales have plummeted over the last 5 years as it all moves online

....also children are only permitted to work for one hour before school starts in term time ...hardly seems worth it Laughing

We take our local paper..the Plymouth herald.....was print here until 10 years ago...now printed in Portsmouth and shipped down 6 nights out of 7..we did have local lads delivering but now it comes in a diesel car driven by an eastern European...and delivery is charged at 30 pence a day...all payments go to Leeds...so it's no long benefitting the local area as it once did..and not very green...

Went digital a few years back and hardly touch a physical 'paper' these days.

It's cheaper (about 45% of the cost of printed media), available from 11.00pm the 'day before', available anywhere in the world when on holiday/business trips and can be downloaded on multiple tablets, phones, etc. so SWMBO and I can read same paper at same time, etc. (95% of my reading is done on my iPhone)

Took a while to get used to it but you can read it like a book, full page at a time, if on a decent sized iPad, pinch and zoom in or tap screen to just have it in large word format like reading an email, etc.

Pictures are crystal clear and zoomable, etc.

If I ordered physical paper I'd expect it delivered by 9.00am latest but given I go to work about 6.00'ish it would be irrelevant other than at weekends.
