Did you try Norwich Union Al? Son's policy came through this morning, he's 18, no no claims bonus, group 7 car and confirmed as £1450 fully comp, me as a named driver.D3 TDV6SE

yes I have, I've even tried their "pay as you drive" scheme. This is fully comp (no other option), again, just using the 1.2 Clio we'd had a look at, and it was just shy of 3grand! (£2970)
I dont know what to tell the kid. He's working part time (full time student, busting a gut to get good A levels results to head of to Uni), with some cash from us, he'd got 3 grand together, thinking 2000 on the motor, 1000 for insurance (not unreasonable you'd think).

Is it no wonder that some are tempted to drive around uninsured these days.
One reason I am glad to be old now... cheap insurance.

dont know how you did it, and I'd keep quiet, as the quote on a 1.6 2000 Laguna for Ben with me as named driver with NU was over 4600.

Cornwall is probably a lot cheaper than most metropolitan areas I'd guess... the post code lottery and all.

some of it is postcode. I just re-tried using my sisters postcode (herefordshire), all other details the same, and it took 500 quid off (down to £1200).
Anybody living in some far flung place want an 18yr lodger - he should be off to Uni in Sept, so wont get under your feet for most of the year

I pay 325 for a LHD TDV8 RRS,and 432 for my MGZT260se both fully comp and with the SWMBO as named driver. A friend has a AM V12 Vantage for sale and I'm interested, so got a quote of 235 to add it to my policy with Admiral The joys of being an old retired B er

Yes I was very pleased Al (if you can be pleased paynig over £1000 for a years insurance) it may be as we have 4 other cars insured at this address they did us a big discount, postcode area helps as well of course. My previous best quote was with Quinn direct, may be worth a try?
Best of luck

Just ran my 17yr old lads details thru confused.com against a 4 year old 1.2 Renault Clio - cheapest quote was £3800 - I've already warned him he can't afford even to buy it never mind insure it. I'm going to recommend he holds off, complete his A-Levels, go to Uni and then look at buying a car of his own then - meanwhile he can remain as a named driver on the MatizSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

that looks like the route we'll be going too. Its just his mom's Scenic isnt something he really wants to be seen driving, still beggars cant be choosers as they say.

Al/Nick, I'm 30 (just) and with NFU and paying quite a bit less than both of you - and protected. Granted we live out in the sticks. Do you push them for discounts? Did you do it online or at one of their offices?2020 SDV6 D5 HSE, Carpathian Grey +

If folk are still looking for cheap insurance for 17 year olds, I've just been through the whole process myself and finished up with Elephant.co.uk - far and beyond the cheapest quote.
I'm a named driver (access to the car only at the odd weekend or summer holiday) but it came to 'only' £960 for the 4 of us (including my 20 yo brother) on a 2.0 Freelander Td4 ES (approx. value £6k, 2k miles per year, no accidents etc...)
I've even phoned elephant to confirm it's true and they indeed will cover us and the show will hit the road.
The next 'cheapest' quote was at least £1.5k more expensive. Elephant.co.uk were by far the best. Furthermore, named drivers accumulate their own NCBs. We're also swapping the Volvo from DL to Elephant and saving another £200 a year
I dont know how they rate if you're looking to get your 17 yo his own car, but if they're an occasional user like me (no references to any form of drugs please ) then they appear to be rather good.2007 Porsche Boxster (987) 2.7

My eldest is 17 in August, I insure all my company vehicles with NFU and have a couple of vans on "any driver policies" which is from 17 upwards and the rest are on "any driver over 25". I also insure my D3 and my Defender 90 with them.
I phoned up my local NFU office and was quoted £300 extra for him to drive my Defender 90, it is a 2007 90 XS with lots of toys and a tune, the total cost will be £700 a year. I thought this was pretty reasonble. I have a Corsa 1.5 diesel for him to drive when he has passed his test, I will probably do the same with that, insure it for me with him as a named driver. All my vehicles, with the exception of the D3, are live tracked, and that does give a further discount (I think 20%)D4 HSE Luxury SDV6,
