You would get a flat battery.
If you aren’t one for listening to the radio without the keys, you could fit a relay with the coil 85 86 connected to the rear of cigar lighter ,
And 30 And 87 connected between ground and the radio wire

The system will not go to sleep and you will get a flat battery.
As said before you have two choices fit a manual switch or replace the head unit.
But I have just thought of another cheap way, use a four pin 30amp relay switched off the cigarette lighter feed that grounds out the wire when the ignition is on. Andrew

Oh! Well I understand the bit 'you would get a flat battery' but as for the rest, totally lost!!! Any chance you could explain it so that my knowledge of electrics , which is not great, might understand?

Got it. Just dug a relay out the 'spares box' and now realise what the numbers are you said about. All makes sense now, hopefully

Pin 85 to earth
Pin 86 to ignition live
Pin 30 to earth
Pin 87 to the wire you need to earth
Pins 85 and 86 energize the relay that then connects pins 30 and 87 Andrew

So, that appears to have done the job so providing it stays like that I don't see there's any reason in forking out for a replacement head unit. Thank you for all your help and may I say your exceptional knowledge. I can now have the sat nav on, which is so out of date that its probably pointless having but atleast I have the pleasure in knowing it all works and the LR badge on the screen greets me every morning.
Now the next job is working out why the suspension decides to lower itself for no particular reason, usually on a straight flat road or motorway. Stop, turn it off, turn it back on, all ok. Any ideas would be extremely appreciated.

You need to read the fault codes many things can cause this problem, even a faulty low pressure fuel pump in the tank Andrew
