Wales, England was separated from Scotland and Northern Ireland by a ocean. Due to continental collision the ocean disappeared and the mountains were born. The Welsh slate is actually old ocean deposits and parts of snowdonia the extinct volcanoes such as cader idiris. Check out the BGS website to better understand the landscape there.

Quite a few extinct volcanoes on Lleyn peninsular where we live, quite visible from a boat sailing down the coast as are amazing cliffs showing the way the rock has been folded.==================================
