the bit I quoted was by means of a "bump" ... except this thread doesn't then appear in the "new posts" view so was a bit wasted in that respect.

I assume there is a logic to that ?

I'd thought by quoting the OP - effectively repeating the instructions - it would bump the thread to top of the "New Posts" lists, but it didn't.

thinking about it, is that something I've got set in my profile ? i.e., "new posts" is personal to my choices ?

edit ... YES. it was.

hadn't realised it but in browsing the "hide these" lists, i'd left this forum selected. Embarassed

In a moment of boredom over breakfast, I read up on spam, on Wikipedia. Once you’ve got past the pork & ham luncheon meat, and the reason that spam email got its name (blame Monty Python), it becomes a deep and fascinating subject!

With the current news and data scares on Facebook, Cambridge analytics etc. It’s perhaps well worth understanding the subject better than we do?

I spent ages "buying" a Discovery that was "in Spain" after finding fake adverts on Autotrader (and feeding back to Autotrader of course ). Learned more about the workings of fake paypal/ebay etc. than I expected to, so very worthwhile.
