Occasions increasing thumping at cruise
On 4-5 occasions over the past 10 months I have encountered an odd thumping/vibration. I'll be cruising at a steady speed 80-100km/h and will first notice a subtle rhythmic thump thump thump starting. As I maintain speed it become more pronounced and starts to be felt through the entire vehicle, it becomes quite aggressive if I were to continue, engine revs stay consistent.
On a couple occasions I slowed down to <20km/h and it went away, speeding back up it did not return. The first time it happened I had a canoe on the roof and thought that it was buffeting in the wind or I had a flat tire but straps were tight when I checked and no movement from it.
Another occasion I was returning with an empty trailer after hauling a heavy load of wood and on the last time nothing on the roof or in tow. That time It occurred twice in sequence, first time I pulled over and stopped, thumping had ceased by the time I got over, pulled out and took a few minutes to return, pulled over again and did not return while finishing the last 8 minutes of the drive to final destination though was on slower speed roads at that point. The return trip home on the same route had no issues. (received an oil spray undercoating before the drive back)
EPB is rarely used but I can say that I had used it on the trailer towing drive and had also used it a few times the night prior to the last occasion. Uncertain on the others. EPB seems to set and release with no issues. Do notice left rear rotor isn't as shiny after a drive as the others around the outer edge. May be speculating at brake involvement, was recording wheel speed sensor live values on the drive home the last time to see if there was any change to speed from brake/EPB involvement but issue did not come back to show me anything.
Anyone experience anything similar?

Two places to look.
The propshaft can give symptoms like this where the centre rubber bushing has collapsed.
This is a first check area. Replacement with GKN brand is usually best course of action as the UJ's are likely past their best as well.
Also, Torque converter/Gearbox can produce a shudder when travelling /cruising. Slowing stops it sometimes, but can also be noticeable until after a full stop in motion.2011 MY D4 HSE

What is the mileage on your D3?
Last autobox oil change?
From 150.000 km on, suspect Torque converter by default….
I had the same symptoms, at 156000 km. (And 15 years of use, incl 2 australia trips) changed the TC for a refurbished one, from a ZF dealer, fresh oil and a replaceable filter
All well since and for 45.000 km now… in all conditions…
At such mileage idd skip a expensive flush exercise “to try” to “repair” it…
Since a new TC also needs fresh oil again.. but that is me… i hate to pay twice for the same stuff Best regards

137000KM / 85000Miles.
Last transmission oil change was 3 drain and fills within the last month. (metal pan swap out and then again when the first gasket leaked) Pan/fluid change was not done to "fix" anything but just a preventative item as I was going to have to top up anyway since I was replacing leaking transmission oil cooler lines that had just started to weep.
Issue occurred a couple times last summer/fall, then once after the first two drains and again after the third. Should note that it has done several highway drives since the last occurrence without repeat of the issue and never a problem around town.

One issue before the fluid change, and now there it's resurfaced tends to point in the direction of a TC problem then.
Post back your result and the specialists diagnosis for info of others if you can.2011 MY D4 HSE

Will do, has an appointment booked next week. Hopeful they will find something but as it is/was infrequent it may be difficult to replicate. As recent EPB use was a commonality between the occasions after the fluid change I had been leaning that direction instead of the TC. Transmission is running smoothly by all other observations.

I had a very similar type of noise on a few occasions with my D3.
A rhythmic droning or thumping noise with a low level vibration like something wrong with a tyre.
Stopping would make it go away, then it would be fine until the next time.
It always happened after I'd done a few miles on a motorway at a reasonable speed.
And I could go weeks without it happening despite using the motorway every day.
I checked all sorts of things, and was convinced it was a driveshaft issue, then one time noticed that one of the rear brakes smelt really hot when I stopped.
I thought it was just a coincidence, as I couldn't see how binding brake would produce the noise etc I was experiencing, but obviously thought I'd best sort the brakes out anyway.
I found that one rear caliper was quite badly seized, so replaced both with new having had a really pleasant surprise at how cheap genuine LR ones were.
I never experienced the noise or vibration again.
I still find it hard to comprehend how a binding brake gave the noises etc, but in my case it did.Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

Did a test before going into service the other day. Applied the EPB a couple times and then went for a drive on the highway. Issue occurred twice while cruising. At destination the center of the left rear wheel was too hot to touch. Cooled down for an hour or so and not issue on the way back home.
Went to service yesterday and confirmed the parking brake on that side is shot causing it to occasionally grip the hub. Time to replace.
